In just six weeks, we've gone from a 64-player watchlist to over 85 players, many of whom will debut in our first Class of 2030 rankings next month. Here, we're sharing five new scouting reports. I'm not looking at any one position, and I hardly have any method for deciding which players to feature. It took no time for the talented freshman to pop up in some box scores, and the Northeastern product looks really good early. Ironically, we thought he'd make his biggest impact as a running back, and while he does have a handful of varsity snaps there, it's as a safety that he's making himself known. He has great speed and is able to break away off the catch. He has good size and route-running ability, especially for a freshman, and though he's not the primary target in that offense, he's a threat to beat the defense every time he steps on the field. Smith is playing primarily on the JV team, but thriving in both coverage and against the run. He plays bigger than his size, as he has length in coverage and is a physical tackler. The Spartans have plenty of prospective future stars in the secondary, but Smith looks like a guy who could contribute sooner rather than later.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:acf/evaluation-block {"name":"acf/evaluation-block","data":{"player_evaluations_0_player":["2399319"],"_player_evaluations_0_player":"field_62ab9d62ecf2c","player_evaluations_0_override_profile_image":"","_player_evaluations_0_override_profile_image":"override-player-profile-image","player_evaluations_0_not_in_database":"","_player_evaluations_0_not_in_database":"field_62aba48cecf2d","player_evaluations":1,"_player_evaluations":"field_62aba7547dc44"},"alignText":"left","anchor":"acf-block-6ab5736b0eecb"} --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"placeholder":"Add evaluation here...","className":"text-gray-700"} --> <p class="text-gray-700">Rice isn't the tallest interior defender you'll ever see, but he's a relentless pass rusher with the ability to finish plays in the backfield. So far this season, he has four tackles for loss and two sacks. A lot of his plays are high-motor plays where he fights through blocks to stop running backs at or near the line of scrimmage. Already well over 220 pounds, James is built like a future edge rusher, but moves like an off-ball linebacker. James is a weight room addict who is always perfecting his craft and improving his body. I'm excited to see what he can do when he eventually makes his way into the varsity squad, because his athletic upside, paired with his work ethic, gives him a massive ceiling.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><em>Which other freshmen need to be on our radar?
