Illinois Week 1 Offensive Standouts

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The 2026 IHSA football season officially kicked off this weekend, and it didn't take long for some of the state's top offensive playmakers to put up huge numbers.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>From explosive quarterback performances to running backs taking over games on the ground, here are some of the offensive players who stood out in Week 1.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">QB [player_tooltip player_id='1598818' first='Michael' last='Vander Luitgaren'] – Batavia </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 28-of-35, 436 passing yards, 5 TDs</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Vander Luitgaren delivered one of the biggest quarterback performances in the state in Batavia's 49-35 win over Maine South. The senior completed 80 percent of his passes while throwing for 436 yards and five touchdowns.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It was an impressive start against a quality opponent and immediately puts Vander Luitgaren among the quarterbacks to watch in Illinois this fall.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">RB Jackson Lawal – Columbia </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 238 rushing yards, 3 TDs, 9.9 yards per carry</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Lawal was a major problem for the Mater Dei defense in Columbia's 36-28 road win. The junior carried 24 times for a career-high 238 yards and three touchdowns.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The combination of production and efficiency stands out. Lawal averaged nearly 10 yards per carry and gave Columbia a workhorse performance in a competitive Week 1 matchup.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">WR [player_tooltip player_id='1598846' first='Bennett' last='Konkey'] – Geneva </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 4 receptions, 178 receiving yards, 2 receiving TDs; 280 all-purpose yards</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There may not have been a more explosive start to the season than Konkey's.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Geneva senior returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, then scored on a 70-yard reception on his first offensive snap. He later added a 49-yard screen for another touchdown as Geneva defeated Libertyville 28-14. Konkey finished with 178 receiving yards and 280 all-purpose yards.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Three touchdowns in the opening eight minutes made it pretty clear that opposing defenses and special teams units will need to know where No. 1 is at all times.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">QB Luke Clouser – Civic Memorial </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 347 passing yards, 3 TDs</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Clouser opened his senior season by putting the ball in the air and producing. He threw for a career-high 347 yards and three touchdowns as Civic Memorial defeated Newton 36-26.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Civic Memorial finished with 523 yards of total offense, and Clouser connected with Grady Farrell for all three of his touchdown passes.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">WR Grady Farrell – Civic Memorial</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 134 receiving yards, 3 TDs</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Farrell was Clouser's go-to weapon in Civic Memorial's season-opening win.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>He accounted for all three of CM's receiving touchdowns while finishing with 134 yards through the air. A three-touchdown performance makes Farrell one of the early receiving names to watch in Southern Illinois.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">RB Mekhi Shorter – Roxana</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 201 rushing yards</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Roxana didn't get the result it wanted in a 42-14 loss to Nashville, but Shorter's performance deserves recognition.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The talented back rushed for a career-high 201 yards despite Roxana playing from behind.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Putting together a 200-yard night when the overall offense is struggling makes the performance even more noteworthy.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">RB [player_tooltip player_id='1335411' first='Ronnie' last='Gomiller'] – East St. Louis </h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 91 rushing yards, 4 total TDs</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When East St. Louis needed someone to take over against defending Class 8A champion Mount Carmel, Gomiller answered.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Cincinnati commit scored four touchdowns in the Flyers' 42-23 victory, including three rushing touchdowns during a 28-point fourth-quarter explosion. Gomiller finished with 91 yards on 13 carries while helping East St. Louis turn a 23-14 fourth-quarter deficit into a convincing victory.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The numbers were good, but the timing of the production made this one of the most impactful Week 1 performances in the state.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">RB Quartland Cox – Belleville West</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 153 rushing yards</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Cox helped set the tone for Belleville West in a dominant 56-0 victory over Alton.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Maroons piled up 280 rushing yards as a team, with Cox accounting for 153 of them.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Belleville West couldn't have asked for a much better start offensively.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">ATH Connor Politsch – Forreston</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 109 rushing yards, 2 rushing TDs, 1 passing TD</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Politsch did a little bit of everything in Forreston's 42-12 victory over Dwight.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>He rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns while also throwing a touchdown pass, accounting for three scores in the Cardinals' season-opening victory.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">QB [player_tooltip player_id='1633030' first='Phillip' last='Turner'] – Kankakee</h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Week 1:</strong> 177 passing yards, 2 passing TDs; 61 rushing yards</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Turner showed his dual-threat ability against Edwardsville.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Kankakee quarterback threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 61 yards on the ground in a 28-7 road victory. He accounted for 238 yards of offense against an Edwardsville defense that has traditionally been one of the stronger units in the Metro East.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
