Today we move to the defensive side of the ball and the safety position. All these guys line up all over the field and play multiple roles – everything from deep safety to slot corner to extra linebacker in the box.
Joey Sorenson Joey Sorenson ATH Spring Lake Park | 2021 State MN Spring Lake Park
Sorenson closes on the ball well. He has good instincts and, with it, has quick reactions to the ball. He is also a physical hitter and has a knack for forcing fumbles. He is also a receiver, and it is easy to tell because of his ability to win contested balls on defense. He is equally adept playing as a center fielder and coming in the box to support the run. He attacks offensive players in the run game.
Kaleb Skelly Kaleb Skelly 6'4" | WR Spring Lake Park | 2021 State MN Spring Lake Park
The Panthers will have a pair of outstanding players patrolling the back end of their defense in 2020. Skelly might be playing receiver or basketball at the next level, but his skills at defensive back should not be ignored. He has great length and has the obvious ball skills that come with that position. He might be tall for a prototypical safety, but his extra length gives him added range. He does not look like he would be a physical defender, but has no issues supporting the run and is a solid tackler.
Brandon Bortnem Brandon Bortnem DB Maple Grove | 2021 State MN Maple Grove
Bortnem is just as comfortable playing in the slot as he is playing as an extra linebacker defending the run. He has the speed to chase people down from behind and plays from sideline to sideline. Bortnem hits like a linebacker and covers like a safety. He transitions well from defending the pass to the run within the same play.
Terrell Davis Terrell Davis DB Fridley | 2021 State MN Fridley
Davis plays safety with the skills of a corner. He plays well on the outside in one on one coverage. At 6’1″ and 180 pounds, he is a physical, big-hitting safety who is not shy about supporting the run or making the big hit on a receiver. He plays wide receiver on offense, and it is obvious to see with his ball skills.
