Five Cornerbacks Breaking Out In The 2025 Season

I recently launched my new player series, examining breakout players for every position, regardless of classification or age. After spending a considerable amount of time discussing offensive players, I shifted to the defensive side last week.   Today, we'll be taking a look at the cornerback position. It was hard narrowing this list down to just five, as there were many players I could've chosen.   But after checking out the film, statistics and the development players have made over an offseason, here are the five guys I picked out.   Several of them are legitimate Power Four prospects, with a couple of underclassmen making the cut. Photo by Blackman Athletics.</figcaption></figure>   2026 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1614217' first='Jaden' last='Lark'] – Blackman   Blackman senior cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='1614217' first='Jaden' last='Lark'] is not just having a breakout season; he's been one of the best defensive backs in the Midstate. He's a veteran guy who's seen plenty of time on the Gridiron.   However, he's taken a significant step up from his previous two years as a legitimate contributor to the Blaze defense.   Lark has been a lockdown guy most of the season, while showcasing his ability to be a ball hawk. He's totaled multiple interceptions while adding three defensive scores to his name.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   <figure class="wp-block-image"><img src="https://prepredzone.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2024/01/Xavier-Bowman-crop-2815x1848-1758392201.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1900821" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo: Knox Catholic cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='1029798' first='Xavier' last='Bowman'] at a Prep Redzone camp.</figcaption></figure>   2028 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1029798' first='Xavier' last='Bowman'] – Knoxville Catholic   [player_tooltip player_id='1029798' first='Xavier' last='Bowman'] is a young player who has grown tremendously throughout this season and has a strong argument to be one of the top cornerbacks nationally for the class of 2028.   He's an extremely talented sophomore who has shown evident progress since his freshman year, and even throughout the 2025 campaign.   Bowman's only knock was how much he held opposing wide receivers early in the year, but he's been much better at that recently. The 2028 DB has even been posted on social media for his impressive coverage skills.   <figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper"> https://twitter.com/shaynep_media/status/1981885783305801831 </div></figure>   He has nice size for his age, standing 5-foot-11 and weighing 170 pounds with a longer frame. Photo by Marion County Athletics.</figcaption></figure>   2028 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1691522' first='Quincy' last='Mills'] – Marion County   [player_tooltip player_id='1691522' first='Quincy' last='Mills'] transferred from Tyner Academy and is making an immediate impact for the 9-1 Marion County Warriors. He's had a good year as a first-time starter, where he's seemingly always making plays on the field.   Mills totaled 25 tackles, three TFLs, five interceptions, and two forced fumbles in nine games this season.   He's a young player with excellent ball-hawking skills, but that's not all he can do. Mills is also a solid coverage player who can effectively clamp down on a receiver if necessary.   He has nice size for a sophomore cornerback with great instincts, giving him one of the highest ceilings for his class.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   2026 CB [player_tooltip player_id='1215798' first='Marquis' last='Earl'] Jr. – Oakland   Senior cornerback [player_tooltip player_id='1215798' first='Marquis' last='Earl'] Jr. transferred to Oakland before the 2024 season, where he was solid.   After a second offseason in the Patriots' program, Earl Jr has taken the next step and been one of the more impressive defensive backs in his class.   He recorded just 10 tackles this season, but don't let those numbers fool you; the senior DB can ball.   Earl Jr is a coverage guy who's been locking up just about every wide receiver he's faced in 2025. You don't hear his name called often, and that's a good thing. It means he's doing his job in the back end of the Oakland defense and allowing his defensive front to feast.   He offers good size at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, with nice footwork, swift hips and the ability to change direction well.   <hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" />   <figure class="wp-block-image"><img src="https://prepredzone.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2025/11/Photo-Nov-05-2025-7-11-47-PM.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-2007467" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Photo: Brentwood Academy cornerback Romel Koon Jr. Photo by Brentwood Academy Athletics.</figcaption></figure>   2027 CB Romel Koon Jr. – Brentwood Academy   Romel Koon Jr was a big addition to Brentwood Academy when he transferred in this offseason. He's stuck at cornerback, where he's played at an elite level and put himself on the map as a legitimate Power Four defensive back.   He's a versatile player who can do it all, whether you ask him to play man coverage, blitz the quarterback, or stay around the flat to sniff out the short passing game.     Koon Jr stands 6-foot-1 with a longer frame, which is excellent for him at the outside corner spot.   The junior prospect is a physical DB who's strong and can play with bigger wide receivers, while also having the athleticism and tools to cover smaller, shifty players.
