Continue ReadingI’ve been making a deliberate effort to not try and discuss the COVID-19 pandemic and its affect on the college recruiting landscape for the MN preps I am blessed to cover, but with campus visits and even face-to-face meetings delayed it’s time to dive headfirst into promoting the c/o 2020 unsigned athletes from each and every position group on the gridiron. These ’20 athletes are the most impacted, so any kind of exposure these articles can provide will hopefully be helpful and important. Northstar Football News will continue these features with the forth installment of the series where we will head over to the offensive side of the ball, and focus on the foundational position for any championship football team: the offensive line. Minnesota is definitely known for producing some hogs up front, and has a tradition of these kids finding success at the FBS, FCS, DII, DIII, and NAIA levels. Much like the NFN features reviewing the defensive side of the ball, there are some studs still available in the 2020 OL class. Whether you’re a coach in need of interior Olineman, offensive tackles, or even potentially DLineman there’s some kids left for you as All-State, All-Metro, MN All-Stars, state champions, and more still remain uncommitted going into the final couple months of the school year. Take a look at some still available playmakers, and enjoy the review of their careers and accomplishments. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy!
Joe Salonek (Wayzata) 6’2, 260 lbs. OG. First Team MNFootballHub All-Metro, Second Team A.P. & MFCA All-State, All-District. MNFootballHub description: “Relentless blocker who routinely drives linemen and creates consistent holes for the Trojans’ power running game. Play with a wide base, allows him to maintain control through the whistle.” They nailed it, as Salonek is an impressive run blocker with the strength and understanding of leverage to open a ton of holes for a college Oline. However, there’s not a lot of pass-pro on his tape..something to note forsure, but his hands and feet but look solid from what I could see from Hudl. Check him out -> Full Season 2019 Senior
Cody Newhouse (Elk River) 6’3, 320 lbs. OC. First Team Kare11 All-Metro, Second Team A.P. & MFCA All-State, All-Distrct, MN All-Star Game participant. The senior Elk River hog didn’t give up a sack all season while playing both ways on one of the most prolific rushing attacks in the state, and although he is so distinguished it’s been quite hard to find any recruiting news on the senior. He’s basically a bulldozer, and is an absolutely ferocious run blocker who routinely sends blockers flying backwards. With Elk River’s pedigree for OLineman, Newhouse would make an excellent addition to a college roster at any level. He doesn’t have a full senior tape, but has game film. vs. Rogers vs. Buffalo vs. Robbinsdale Armstrong vs. Moorhead
Elijah Bicek (Elk River) 6’2, 230 lbs. @EliBicek TE/OT/LB Second Team MNFootballHub All-Metro, All-Distrct, Team Captain. Holds an offer from University of Jamestown. Could play a variety of positions in college, but since he was named in the “lineman” category for the All-Metro lists I figured I’d mention him here. Another punishing Elk River run-blocker, Bicek is great at the point of contact, has a ton of pop, and the athleticism to easily get to the second level and do some damage. Also an explosive LB. #44 Senior Year
Isaiah Forrester (Caledonia) 6’3, 280 lbs. @77Forrester OT All-District. Natural strength and understanding of leverage that you want to see in a lineman. Good use of hands as well, and seems to take pleasure in finishing defenders into the turf and has the nasty streak you love to see out of a lineman. Junior Season 2018
Kyle Lattery (Lakeville South) 6’2, 275 lbs. @kylelatteryy OC All-District, MN All-Star Game participant, team captain. Holds an offer from UMary. Plays with an incredibly low center of gravity and explodes into blocks out of his stance. Great finisher as well, and has a ton of pop. Hopefully he’ll find a home soon. Senior Year
Zach Wiese (Owatonna) OG/OC @zwiese99 All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Really intriguing prospect whose Hudl I really enjoyed watching. A tad undersized, but holy cow he plays with the juice and is a relentless blocker with strength and tenacity that moves on the outside like a LB and hits ya like one too. Good in pass-pro too. Also one of the state’s top goaltenders on the ice. Pancake Tape
Brady Ridler (BOLD) 6’4, 250 lbs. OT. All-District, MN All-Star Game participant, West Central Tribune All-Area. State qualifying wrestler. From the West Central Tribune “With seven solo tackles, 25 assisted tackles and a sack, Ridler was named to the All-District team after being an honorable mention last season. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound tackle helped an offense that averaged 372 yards per game. He was selected to compete in the 47th Minnesota High School All Star game.
“Brady has been one of our best offensive linemen for the past two years and he is our best lineman this season,” head coach Derek Flann said. “Those teams average almost 400 yards per game while going 25-1 to this point. He is a prototypical right tackle; he is big and physical and he loves that part of the game. He loves to move bodies around and finish the play. We have used him on both sides of the ball to anchor our offensive and defensive lines over the last two years. He is a kid that used the weight room to make himself into a great football player. He put in time in there and it has paid off big time.”” Unfortunately he has no film, and no Twitter, and Bold does not have a football account I can find. Either way, I hope he ends up somewhere.
Marvin Lamin (Spring Lake Park) 6’4, 270 lbs. @marvin_lamin OT. All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Got to see him play live against Irondale and Coon Rapids, and he’s a bruiser. With a good wrestling background, he has the size and tools to make for a great collegiate OLineman. vs. Elk River vs. Robbinsdale Cooper
Caleb Schouviller (Rocori) 6’3, 265 lbs. All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Great puller, strong, and moves well for his size. Can’t find any recruitment news. vs. Winona vs. Detroit Lakes vs. Delano
Owen Prom (Stillwater) 6’0, 250 lbs. Ponies team MVP, All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Not a lot of film on him unfortunately. vs. Farmington
JJ Sabolik (West Central Area) 6’3, 275 lbs. OT/DT All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Gigantic, and moves well for his size. Athletic and moves well in space as well. Highlights
Spence Evans (Paynesville) 6’2, 250 lbs. @sevans39 OG/DT All-District, MN All-Star Game participant. Junior highlights are “private” on Hudl.
Antoine Glasby (St. Paul Johnson) 6’5, 330 lbs. @ea_e71 OT/DT. Has some pretty stinkin’ highlights, as he can get his 330 lb. frame moving in a way I was not expecting, and looks great in space with the ability to pull already there. Super physical as well, absolutely wrecks some DBs in his tape. Really high ceiling as a lineman. Senior Year Highlights
Isaac Rooker (Totino-Grace) 6’3, 240 lbs. @RookerIsaac OT/TE Had some injury issues as an upperclassman in high school, but has some good experience on one of 6A’s top competitors and the frame to really make a recruiting coordinator look like a genius for taking a risk on the kid. Junior Year
Ethan Sutton (Robbinsdale Armstrong) 6’0, 250 lbs. @ethsutton02 3.58 GPA. OG. Plays with good technique and physical enough to be a menace as a run blocker. Senior Year
Cade Wosmek (New London-Spicer) 6’3, 290 lbs. @CadeWosmek OG. Nasty olineman with great size and solid strength and lateral agility. Junior Year
Kevin Ramos (Robbinsdale Armstrong) 6’0, 240 lbs. OT/DL/TE @KevRam14 Holds an offer from Augsburg University Senior Season
Check them out, and if you’re a coach – hit them up! I hope you enjoyed.
