Mississippi high school ball kicked off in full force this past week! With the public schools now playing, we’ve got plenty of football for many weeks to come now.
Week 1 featured some exciting matchups with some even more entertaining outcomes. Some of Mississippi’s top prospects balled out, while other new prospects are emerging. Let’s check out 10 of Mississippi’s best performers from the first week back!
[player_tooltip player_id="104161" first="Dayan" last="Bilbo"] | Vancleave | RB
In Vancleave’s 44-28 season opening win over St. Martin, it was the [player_tooltip player_id="104161" first="Dayan" last="Bilbo"] show all Friday night. Bilbo finished with an astonishing 405 rushing yards while scoring 5 times on the ground. Bilbo flashed impressive burst and explosion in the open field as well as newly refined vision. Really impressed by his week 1 results and excited to watch him take on Hancock this week.
[player_tooltip player_id="112388" first="Eli" last="Anderson"] | Neshoba Central | QB
In the duel between Hernando’s [player_tooltip player_id="104367" first="Zach" last="Wilcke"] and Neshoba Central’s [player_tooltip player_id="112388" first="Eli" last="Anderson"], Anderson won this one with ease. Finishing the night 18/23 for 294 yards, 4 TDs, and 40 rushing yards, Anderson looks like the quarterback we thought he would be this season. Anderson showed great poise under pressure and threw better downfield than ever before. This guy has made tremendous strides in the offseason and his hard work showed for it. Neshoba Central takes on West Lauderdale this coming week.
Jaylon Price | Ruleville Central | DL
Although he didn’t play football last season due to COVID-19, Jaylon Price looks like he never missed a step. In his first game back, Price totaled 4 sacks, 8 tackles, and one forced fumble in a 18-14 loss against Port Gibson. Although he is understandably raw, Price flashed a ton of athletic upside to be a college prospect. With his quick first step and violent hands, the sky is the limit for Price.
[player_tooltip player_id="158985" first="Josh" last="Sykes"] | Park Place Christian | ATH
Sykes has been a force to be reckoned with this season. The Preseason All-State WR put up 6 catches for 191 yards and 4 TDs, while also having 8 tackles and 2 forced fumbles on the defensive side of the ball. Central Hinds Academy ended up winning this one 35-34, but Sykes remains looking like one of the top dogs of the MAIS. Looking for him to have another big week this week against Cathedral.
[player_tooltip player_id="104069" first="Deandre" last="Smith"] | Greenville Christian | QB
If you haven’t heard about [player_tooltip player_id="104069" first="Deandre" last="Smith"]’s season this year, I’m not sure where you have been at. The state’s premier passer went 10/14 for 145 yards and a TD, in addition to his 11 carries for 227 3TDs in a 58-0 win over J.Z. George. Smith has shown this season that he can get it done in the air or on the ground, and that nobody in the state is seemingly capable of slowing him down. Smith takes on Collins Hill (Georgia) this week in one of the state’s biggest matchups.
[player_tooltip player_id="108938" first="Bray" last="Hubbard"] | Ocean Springs | QB
In a crazy 2 OT game vs Clinton, [player_tooltip player_id="108938" first="Bray" last="Hubbard"] was the difference maker. The junior quarterback accounted for 205 yards passing and 2 scores, while also rushing for 88 yards and 4 touchdowns. That made 6 total for Hubbard in Ocean Springs 45-44 win. Hubbard looked like one of 6A’s most dangerous weapons under center Thursday night and will look to capitalize on his momentum this week against Hattiesburg.
[player_tooltip player_id="104547" first="Dakota" last="Jordan"] | Jackson Academy | ATH
The Mississippi State commit returned to action this week in a big 27-13 win over Leake Academy. Jordan played limited snaps, but made the most of his time on the field with 3 carries for 33 yds and a score, and 3 catches for 100 yards and a score. Jordan is one of the most dangerous athletes in the entire state, so Jackson Academy will up his touch count over the weeks to come. Looking for the senior to continue dominating this week against Oak Forrest Academy (Louisiana).
[player_tooltip player_id="106165" first="Ayden" last="Williams"] | Ridgeland | WR
Williams looked how he has looked in 7v7 this summer during week 1 - dominant. Ridgeland won over Northwest Rankin 42-26 and Williams accounted for 5 catches, 100 yards, and 2 TDs. Williams made many impressive grabs over defenders heads this week and showed that he is one of the best jump ball receivers in Mississippi. Williams and Ridgeland will take on a good Pearl defense this week.
Jalandyn Humphrey | Holmes County Central | DL
Humphrey was a guy that jumped on our radar after a big first week. A member of one of the state’s best defenses, Humphrey totaled 3 sacks and 9 tackles in Holmes County Central’s 47-0 win over Greenwood. Humphrey showed impressive speed and strength off the edge and was incredibly difficult to block in both the run and pass game. Humphrey will look to continue dominating this week against McComb.
[player_tooltip player_id="104207" first="Jeremiah" last="Dillon"] | Tylertown | WR
The Ole Miss commit impressed in his first game back at Tylertown. Dillon put up 5 catches for 88 yards and 3 total TDs. In addition to that, he also had a 2 point conversion. Dillon looked as fast as he ever has and was borderline impossible to stop in Tylertown’s 46-30 win over Wesson. The speed at Tylertown is ridiculous.
