Throughout the month of July and even into August, we are publishing well over 100 of the most in-depth team previews that you'll find anywhere to get you completely ready for the 2025 football season. This is something that began for us at PRZ-Oklahoma in 2021 and it continues to get bigger and better every single year. We're looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state in every class. From defending champions, to the top contenders and plenty of dark horses and other teams to know, we'll have complete coverage every single day. There will be multiple previews dropping every single day! In this post, we take a look at the Alva Goldbugs!

Alva Goldbugs

Preseason Prep Redzone Ranking: #5 In Class 2A-2

Head Coach: Ryne Wilson - 2nd Season - 8-3 Record At Alva

2024 RESULTS (8-3 Record - Lost In Class 2A-2 1st Round)

Aug. 30th - Lost To Fairview 35-7
Sept. 6th - Beat Perry 21-20
Sept. 13th - Beat Woodward 14-13
Sept. 27th - Beat Casady 40-21
Oct. 3rd - Beat Hennessey 28-14
Oct. 11th - Lost To Stroud 54-15
Oct. 17th - Beat Luther 33-18
Oct. 25th - Beat Kellyville 56-0
Nov. 1st - Beat Meeker 39-15
Nov. 7th - Beat Newkirk 47-0
1st Round - Lost To Beggs 43-0

2024 Offensive Scoring Average: 27.3 Points Per Game
2024 Defensive Scoring Average: 21.2 Points Per Game

In the new Class 2A-2, Alva is quickly becoming a team that needs to be talked about more. They came into the 2024 football season as a top ten team in our preseason rankings. The 2A-2 coaches had them as a top five team. They were coming off a quarterfinal appearance in 2023 and had plenty of momentum with them as they entered the new era of Class 2A-2 football. However, they would do it under a first year head coach, although not someone they were unfamiliar with. Following spring practices, Ryne Wilson was introduced as Alva's next head football coach. He took over the program in early June. The season kicked off with a loss to defending Class A champion Fairview, but they would win their next four games, including back to back 1-point victories over Perry and Woodward. They lost in a blowout to Stroud as the Tigers went on to capture the district championship. But Alva didn't lose the rest of the way. They finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and they were rather dominant in the rest of those district games. They had some real momentum coming with them into the playoffs but that came to a screeching halt. They ran into Beggs in the first round and the Demons would beat the Goldbugs 43-0, ending Alva's season at 8-3 with a first round exit. But Alva took some steps in the right direction and as we start looking ahead to 2025, they have a serious chance to take a major leap forward and not just a few steps.

2025 OUTLOOK

Alva comes into the 2025 football season as a top five team in Class 2A-2. Similar to a few other of the top teams in this class, the Goldbugs run the flexbone offense and will lean on the experience that they do have returning to help some of the new guys. Only five starters are back on the offensive side of the ball. But the Goldbugs are confident that they can get some of those new pieces to step up because of how strong they are on the line of scrimmage. They'll have a new quarterback under center and whenever you're talking about the flexbone offense, there's certainly a learning curve for the quarterback. If they can solidify that spot, we like the talent they have returning at the skill positions. Defensively, Alva also brings back five starters from last year's team. And similar to the offense, the Alva coaches are confident with who they bring back on the line of scrimmage and that's even extended to include the entire front seven. All in all, the Goldbugs have some decent production coming back but they will also need those new names to grow up in a hurry. Alva will challenge themselves with a competitive non-district schedule but it's not something that they can't handle. Halfway through the regular season, they'll have their showdown with Stroud. Those two teams feel like the top two in this district heading into the season. Alva can compete for the state championship without winning the district (Davis just did that in 2024) but winning the district certainly helps. The Goldbugs have a team that could do just that and set themselves up for a strong run in November.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Cambell Gaisford - Quarterback
Hunter Pfleider - Running Back/Linebacker
Lantz Mathers - Running Back/Linebacker

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Junior [player_tooltip player_id='1709298' first='Maddux' last='Beck'] is a player that we're very intrigued to watch this season. Beck is listed at 6'5 and 200 pounds and will be taking the field on offense as a tight end and on defense as a defensive end. Because of Alva's flexbone offense, the opportunities as a pass catcher might be limited this season. But that size will definitely make him a threat in the redzone. Defensively, Beck could be an absolute nightmare for opposing offensive tackles. His overall size and athleticism is going to be a problem for shorter offensive tackles that can't handle the length. Obviously Beck has to prove it on the field but there's a lot of potential there.

Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1680779' first='Shawn' last='Hamlett'] has the potential to be one of the top two-way players in Class 2A-2 this season. Last year, Hamlett was one of the team's top tacklers and brings that experience to this year's defense. As a junior, Hamlett would finish the year with just over 80 tackles on the season. He'll bring that same intensity to the defensive side of the ball this season and if he can produce at that level and bring along some of those new faces, the Goldbugs will be solid on defense. But the Alva coaches are excited about Hamlett's potential on the offensive side of the ball. He'll be also getting plenty of reps on offense as a running back. He could be a breakou player on offense.

Senior offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1709296' first='Trace' last='Hamilton'] was one of the first names that Alva's coaches mentioned as players to watch this season and it's easy to see why. Hamilton comes back with plenty of experience on both sides of the line of scrimmage. And when you're talking about the flexbone offense, and any run game for that matter, it all starts up front with the offensive line. Having a player like Hamilton returning with experience will certainly help those new faces come along quickly. Defensively, Hamilton also gives the Goldbugs a player that can dominate the line of scrimmage. He'll be one of the more experienced players for Alva this fall.

Junior quarterback and linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1709297' first='Tripp' last='Cole'] is stepping into a new role this season for the Goldbugs. Last season, Cole's biggest contribution to the team was on defense from the linebacker position. He was very productive, finishing with over 50 tackles on the year. But this year, he'll be starting on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Cole has been handed the keys to the flexbone offense. And as we've mentioned a few times in this preview, anytime you have a first year starter at quarterback, that's a storyline to follow throughout the season. If Cole takes care of the football, this offense will be in good shape. Don't overlook the impact he can have on defense.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Adler Bates - 2029 Running Back/Linebacker
Bentley London - 2026 Running Back/Linebacker
Coleman Gaisford - 2027 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Daveon Logan - 2028 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Jett Kelln - 2029 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Keiden Kimberly - 2027 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Tucker Hannaford - 2027 Running Back/Linebacker

2025 SCHEDULE

Aug. 29th - AT Fairview
- For the second straight year, the regular season will open up with a game against Fairview. Last season, Alva dropped the season opener, losing 35-7 to the Yellowjackets. These two are very familiar with one another but Fairview has had Alva's number recently. They've won the last four in the series.
Sept. 5th - Perry
- The home opener comes in week one as the Goldbugs will host Perry. Alva won last year's meeting 21-20 and the last three match-ups have been decided by a total of five points so it's been very competitive. Alva is looking for their first 3-game win streak against Perry in over a decade.
Sept. 12th - AT Woodward
- The non-district schedule will wrap up in week two with a road game against Woodward. Last season, these two teams met for the first time in recent memory and they played a tight game. The Goldbugs would prevail 14-13 in a low-coring and competitive game. Alva will get a week off after this game to prepare for district play.
Sept. 26th - Casady
- District play opens with a week four home game against Casady. Last season was Casady's first as an official OSSAA-member and the Alva game was actually their first official district match-up. Alva rolled to a 40-21 victory. The Goldbugs look to roll again when they host the Cyclones in week four.
Oct. 3rd - AT Hennessey
- In week five, Alva will go on the road to square off with Hennessey. Last season, the Goldbugs beat Hennessey 28-14. That was their second straight victory in the series. These two teams have played every year since 2008. But since starting in ‘08, Hennessey has an 11-6 record.
Oct. 10th - Stroud
- All eyes will be on this district match-up as Alva hosts Stroud to kick off the second half of the regular season in week six. Last season, the Goldbugs were no match for the Tigers as Stroud rolled to a 54-15 victory and on to the district title. The district title could be on the line again here in week six.
Oct. 16th - AT Luther
- On a Fall Break Thursday night, Alva heads to Luther on a short week after the showdown with Stroud. Last season, Alva bounced back from the loss to Stroud by beating Luther 33-18. That victory would actually snap a four-game losing streak against the Lions. It was their first meeting since 2021.
Oct. 24th - AT Kellyville
- After the redistricting shuffle and 2A split in 2024, Alva got several new district opponents that they hadn't previously played. Kellyville was one of them. The Goldbugs would shut out Kellyville, winning 56-0 last season. That would end up being their largest margin of victory in 2024.
Oct. 31st - Meeker
- Following back to back road games, Alva will finally return home in week nine for another district match-up with a somewhat new opponent. Last year was their first meeting with Meeker in recent memory. Last season, they would roll to a 39-15 victory. A win here could help capture that district title.
Nov. 6th - AT Newkirk
- The regular season comes to an end with a road game against Newkirk in week ten. Last season, the Goldbugs rolled to a 47-0 victory over Newkirk. It was their second straight in the series and the fourth in the last five years. All four of those wins have been by well over 20 points.

NOTABLE

With the split in Class 2A, it has certainly opened doors for more teams to compete for the state championship. For the Goldbugs, they come into this season looking to do just that and they won't be happy with just another playoff appearance. As we mentioned earlier in the preview, on paper, they look like a team that could capture the district championship. And if they're able to do that, they could end up making a run in November and potentially punch their ticket to the state championship game in December. And if the Goldbugs were to do that, they'd be making history. Alva made it to the semifinals back in 2017 but that was only the second time they've made it to the semifinals and the first since the late 40's. And they've never played for the state championship. Class 2A-2 definitely feels top-heavy coming into this season with Davis, Vian and Adair all at the top of the 2A-2 rankings. But who steps up after them is a big storyline going into 2025. Alva had a really strong 2024 season and now they look for more in 2025.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2024 - 8-3 - Lost In Class 2A-2 1st Round
2023 - 7-6 - Lost In Class 2A Quarterfinals
2022 - 3-7 - Missed Playoffs
2021 - 4-7 - Lost In Class 2A 1st Round
2020 - 2-9 - Lost In Class 2A 1st Round

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

0 State Championships
