Casey Schultz is a 6’4″, 205 lb. Linebacker for the Caledonia Warriors who just finished his Junior Season. Schultz played a huge role on a stellar defensive unit that only gave up 6 points a game on average, while pitching 4 shutouts. Schultz was tied for third on the team with 46 tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. From the few games I watched the Warriors play, what stood out to me about Casey Schultz was his build and speed. He seemed very disciplined on the edge with containment and made the tackle when the opportunity came, did not force the issue. He has a very quick first step off the ball, makes him very hard to block which wreaks havoc for the opposing offense. I was able to catch up with Casey and interview him about his 2019 season and his recruiting process. Check it out below!
Casey Schultz- Dugan ThomasNFN: Hello Casey, tell us a little about yourself and when you started playing football.
Schultz: I started playing football in 3rd grade. In Caledonia, the varsity players go to the younger practices, which was cool because we looked up to them as athletes and people. They taught us to work hard at a young age, that has carried on into my career now. Now that I am on varsity myself, I can go back and help out the younger kids to and teach them what I was taught at a young age not only about football but also about life. Helping these kids has taught me to be patient and have good communication. I’ve always been determined to get better and improve myself as an athlete and a person.
NFN: What do you love about the game of football?
Schultz: I love how football is more than just a game. It has taught me many life lessons, such as how to work hard to be successful. It has also taught me to never give up and with hard work, I will gain success. I love that football is a team sport, or a brotherhood as we call it here in Caledonia. Success is not achieved by one person, success will depend upon your ability to work well with your teammates,
NFN: How was your team’s season?
Schultz: We had a lot of people doubting us because of the seniors we lost. That didn’t stop us from working hard and getting better each day. We stayed humble and worked our way to a perfect 14-0 record and our 5th straight State Title.
NFN: How was your season personally?
Schultz: This year I had to fill many different roles as a player because of injuries. I started at Defensive End, played there most of the year, then switched to Linebacker at the end of the season.
NFN: What were your expectations for you and your team?
Schultz: My expectations were to do whatever it takes to help the team compete in the State Tournament. We lost a lot of senior leadership from last season, so we knew those guys would be hard to replace, but our coaches do a great job of preparing everyone to be ready when it is their time to step up and contribute to the team’s success.
NFN: How has your recruiting been going?
Schultz: I’ve been contacted by a few colleges, but nothing too serious.
NFN: What are you looking for in a college program?
Schultz: I want to go to a program that is similar to Caledonia’s. I liked being pushed to work for my spot on the field and not just having it given to me.
Schultz will look to help Caledonia to another State Title in 2020 for his Senior Season. Check out his early 2019 season highlights
