From the first snap, Gomes’ explosive release was on full display. He consistently won off the line against press coverage, using a combination of quick feet, hand usage, and subtle shoulder dips that left defensive backs grabbing air. He already plays much bigger than his frame suggests because of how cleanly he gets into his routes. Route running was the story of the day. Gomes ran razor-sharp routes — precise stem work, sudden breaks at the top of the route, and elite body control. Whether it was a 5-yard hitch, a 12-yard curl, or a deep dig, he created separation instantly. No wasted steps. No rounding. Just clean, efficient movement that translates directly to the next level. Speed is the other separator. Gomes is very fast in the open field — both top-end and acceleration. He routinely turned short routes into big gains by stacking defenders and exploding past them once he cleared the first level.
In 7v7 space, that speed becomes lethal. Multiple times he tracked deep balls over his shoulder and pulled away from trailing safeties who simply couldn’t match his long-stride burst. Ball skills matched the athleticism. Gomes used his hands extremely well, plucking the ball at the highest point and securing it immediately. He made multiple tough catches in traffic through the middle of the field and several boundary grabs where he had to extend and high-point while keeping his feet in bounds. Contested-catch ability at his size is rare, and Gomes showed it repeatedly. Perhaps most impressive for an underclassman was his high football IQ. Gomes consistently found soft spots in zone coverage, worked back to the quarterback on scramble drills, and communicated adjustments pre-snap. He played with a veteran’s awareness — exactly what college offensive coordinators are looking for in a future starter.
