John Matthews John Matthews 6'0" | 185 lbs | WR Newnan | 2028 State GA is a clear talent at the wide out position, and he has the top tier ball skills that speaks for itself. Matthews has a lot of talent that is clearly going to translate to the next level and the skillset to really take it to the next level on the gridiron this season in 2026. I expect him to have a great season, and he will be a big-time target obviously for his quarterback and team this year.

A smooth route-runner with impressive breakaway speed, Matthews is a natural pass-catcher who can get open and change directions on a dime. He shows strong hands, burst, and the ability to elude defenders down the field. He can make a tough catch on the sideline and plays bigger than his 6-foot-0 185-pounds. He shows quick feet, terrific ball skills and was extremely productive as a sophomore this fall, catching 41 passes for 837 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging an eye-opening 20 yards per catch. The Newnan star wideout is now ranked by Prep Redzone as the No. 1 WR prospect in the state for his class.

A speedy, explosive wide receiver in Newnan, Matthews is just a sophomore but is playing like one of the top wide receivers in the Atlanta-area right now. He’s a big-play machine averaging an impressive 22.8 yards per catch with five touchdowns through the first half of the season. He’s terrific after the catch and has hauled in 28 passes for 637 yards. His recruitment has taken off over the last two months and he earned a new offer this weekend from the in-state Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Right now, the 6-foot-0 185-pounder is ranked as the No. 3 WR and the No. 17 overall prospect in the state for the 2028 class. Don’t be surprised to see more offers head his way over the next several weeks and into the winter.

One of the top young wide receivers in Georgia, Matthews is a sure-handed pass-catcher who made his mark already as a freshman last season with 34 catches for 427 yards and six touchdowns. Excellent numbers for a first-year receiver. He’s a crafty runner with good speed, burst, and excellent ball skills for his age. He’s a proven weapon already who holds early offers from Georgia and Auburn. He’s got a chance to light up the stat sheet next season and be one of the more productive 2028 wide receivers in the area. If he continues to improve and develop over time, more offers will be coming his way in bunches. The Newnan standout is now ranked by Prep Redzone as the No. 17 overall prospect in Georgia for his class.

One of the state’s most productive freshman wide receivers from last season, Matthews is coming off a promising first season in 2024 where he hauled in 33 passes for 422 yards and six touchdowns. He can make a tough catch in traffic, has room to put on more size and muscle, quick feet, and the potential to have a true breakout season next fall as a sophomore. He’s one of the top returning wideouts in the region and will be an easy addition to the next 2028 Prep Redzone update.

If you like to follow Underclassmen with a lot of upside then Matthews is your guy. The 5’11 160 WR finished his freshman season with a flurry last year. He caught 11 passes for 176 yards and 3 TDs for the Cougars final stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. Lean right now but that comes with age and as he matures he will fill out. Good hands and a very good route runner for a Freshman. Matthews is one to watch over the next 3 years and his continues to develop on the field and in the weight room.
