CAYCE | The numbers produced by Westside senior athlete Dreson Evans (pictured) would seemingly attract higher college interest

That's apparently not the case for the 5-foot 10, 175-pounder who produced 736 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns at wide receiver and running back. Despite playing with SC Prep Redzone Player of the Year quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='346189' first='Cutter' last='Woods'] and wide receivers [player_tooltip player_id='272708' first='Chamarryus' last='Bomar'] and [player_tooltip player_id='272705' first='Armoni' last='Weaver'], Evans arrived at Brookland-Cayce High School Saturday with just one scholarship offer.

He, his family, and coaches hope his Overall Most Valuable Player performance at the SC High School Blitz Army National Guard Senior Showcase increases that number. Evans' two touchdown receptions led the West to a 34-7 victory over the East.

“I think I got a lot more,” said Evans about college interest. “I just wanted to come out here and show my talents. I just wanted to have a great time and put on a good thing for my team and my coaches.”

Evans' scores to start and end the game seemingly came out of the Rams' playbook. As Blacksburg quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1149066' first='Josh' last='Sims'] escaped pressure, he fired a long pass downfield to an uncovered Evans.

The 73-yard touchdown reception gave the West a 7-0 lead with 5:09 left in the first quarter.

Evans' final receiving touchdown occurred with 7:10 left in the game. He broke open for a 60-yard touchdown pass from Rock Hill quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='809751' first='Ian' last='Grissom'] to close out the scoring.

Evans' finished with three receptions for 147 yards. His 11-yard carry set up a 38-yard field goal by Greenwood's [player_tooltip player_id='1249849' first='Noah' last='Perrin'] in the fourth quarter.

Perrin was 2-2 on field goals to win Special Teams MVP.

The West got a three-yard touchdown pass from Mountain View Prep's [player_tooltip player_id='349806' first='Bryson' last='Drummond'] to Wide Receiver MVP Shane Davidson of Gaffney and one-yard run from Byrnes' Ta'Lik Dawkins.

Led by the imposing presence of 6-foot 7, 310-pound Offensive Lineman MVP [player_tooltip player_id='1157043' first='Oliver' last='Marett'] of Belton-Honea Path, the West doubled the East in total yards (368-177). It also allowed just one sack.

Clover's [player_tooltip player_id='371858' first='Trenton' last='McGill'], Belton-Honea Path's Brody Smith, South Pointe's Ethan McNutt, and Broome's Amiri Shipman were also contributors on the West offensive line.

Even more pleasing to the eyes of winning West head coach Reggie Shaw of Byrnes was his defense. Fittingly, the final defensive stop of the game came on a tipped interception by Rebel linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1575309' first='Shayne' last='Dixon'].

He finished with the West's second-most tackles with seven to earn Linebacker MVP.

“It's pretty awesome,” Shaw said. “Shayne has just battled so much in his life and to come out here and to win his last high school game and to play lights out…a phenomenal night for him.”

Leading the West was South Pointe defensive end and Defensive Line MVP TimAreon Williams. The 6-foot 4, 220-pound senior had nine tackles, six for loss, and two sacks.

Despite the loss, the East did have its share of notable performances. Pinewood Prep's [player_tooltip player_id='1360283' first='Jeremiah' last='Singleton'] rushed for a game-high 82 yards to earn Running Back MVP honors.

He accounted for 58 of the 80 yards the East used on its lone scoring drive. It ended with a 17-yard touchdown pass by Phillip Simmons quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='502413' first='Tavien' last='Orellana'] to Hanahan wide receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1359150' first='Dru' last='Goldsmith'].

Linebackers Jasson Brockington of McBee and Nygel Singleton of Darlington were aggressive throughout the game. Both had double-digit in tacklers and helped limit the West's ground game in the first half.

Brockington finished with a game-high 13 tackles to win Defensive Back MVP.

North Myrtle Beach defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='809755' first='DJ' last='Gause'] accounted for the East's lone sack and fumble recovery. Defensive linemen Michael Steed and [player_tooltip player_id='1574071' first='Carl' last='Fulmer'], both of Dutch Fork, and [player_tooltip player_id='1157753' first='Kemuel' last='Little'] of Blythewood, all had tackles for losses upfront.

“Recruiting is down right now and I just appreciate High School Blitz and all they do for trying to promote these kids because it's tough,” Shaw said. “Recruiting is tough, so to have another game to go out and display some talent against All-Stars is phenomenal. I hope they pick up a lot of offers after this.”
