Continue ReadingDebuting this week will be a new column where I put to paper a roundup of thoughts concerning high school football teams and players as well as recruiting updates from around the state. The dog days of summer are slowly approaching which means the Friday night lights will soon reappear. Without further ado, let’s dive on in.
- Jaheim Oatis Jaheim Oatis 6'4" | 345 lbs | DL Columbia | 2022 State MS is a man among boys. 350 pounders simply should not be able to move the way he does. If you have not seen what I’m talking about check out Oatis twitter page for a look at the agility he showcased at Mississippi State’s camp over this past weekend. You will quickly understand how Nick Saban took notice so quickly. Oatis is a current Crimson Tide commit.
- Camp season is back alive and well. Thank God. What a breath of fresh air it was to see videos and pictures of kids back at camps this past weekend. With the dead period for recruiting now lifted, normalcy following the Covid-19 pandemic appears to be on the return.
- Mississippi State secured a commitment from the biggest sleeper on the defensive side of the ball in Donterry Russell Donterry Russell 6'4" | 190 lbs | DL Provine | 2022 State MS over the weekend. Russell is a perfect fit as a DE or even outside edge rusher in Zach Arnett’s 3-3-5 system. The Provine native, Russell, is aimed for a monstrous Senior year.
- Southern Miss continues to stay hot on the recruiting trail and currently has 9 commitments from in-state kids. Will Hall is well on his way to building a “built from within” program in Hattiesburg. The latest commit, Mario Wilbourn Mario Wilbourn 6'1" | 215 lbs | LB Lafayette County | 2022 State MS of Lafayette County, is a guy we have been high on as an ILB for a long time.
- Who’s next? Be on the lookout for the recruitment of Cartize Booth Cartize Booth 6'4" | 205 lbs | DL Bay Springs | 2022 State MS of Bay Springs. Booth had 6.5 sacks and 60 + tackles in a shortened season last year and has prototype build for an edge rusher. Numerous Group of 5 offers are present and should have a host of more on the way.
Check back in next week for an update of what I’m seeing across the state of Mississippi on the high school football front.
