We spotlighted De Freitas – the fifth-ranked kicker in the country in his class – as a small school stud for a good reason. His 62-yard field goal two weeks ago against Concord flashed his cannon for a leg. If NorthWood gets into tight games (starting with next Friday’s opener against South Bend Washington) so common for the late fall, De Freitas could be a difference-maker with the game on the line.

De Freitas, a senior, is a five-star rated kicker (Kohls) and it’ss easy to see why: the 6-foot-0, 180-pound kicker has a leg of steel. He drilled a 62-yarder through the uprights two weeks ago – setting a new state record – against Concord which will undoubtedly draw interest from Power 4 teams.

Already known as one of the nation’s top kickers, De Freitas made Indiana history on Friday night. With a stiff wind at his back, De Freitas hit an Indiana-record 62-yard field goal. Not only did his mechanics stay true to form, but he had the confidence he could make the kick. Plus, the staff had the confidence to give him the chance. A strong wind can help, but you must still hit the ball cleanly, track the wind accurately, and clear the line on top of everything else. Throughout his career, he’s hit multiple 50+ yard field goals and always cleared the bar with plenty of room.
