High Five: Breck vs. Minneapolis Patrick Henry

A strong showing by the Breck Mustangs' defense kept the one-loss home team in their game against Minneapolis Patrick Henry. In the second half, the defense continued to play strong, and the offense got on track. They finished the game and regular season with a 28-9 win over Henry. The Mustangs ended the season with a 7-1 record. Here are five individuals who stood out. Alex McKenna QB Breck McKenna had a great all-around game. Early in the game, he showed nice movement in the pocket and was able to make time to make a completion. McKenna is not afraid to tuck the ball and run. He ran for a short touchdown and, earlier in the drive, set up his touchdown with a designed quarterback sweep that picked up a first down. He threw two nice deep balls on post patterns. The senior made two clutch throws late in the game. He was right on target with a deep out pass. Facing a 1st and 21, he completed a pass to Carter Theissen down the sidelines for a 34-yard gain. Later, he threw a 17-yard fade to Theissen for a touchdown. He contributed on defense too – with a handful of tackles in the secondary. Will Ott WR/DB Breck Early in the game, Ott broke up a pass into the flat and almost turned it into an interception. Throughout the game, he was solid defending the running game, and it looked like he drew a couple of holding penalties. He made his first play on offense, making a catch for a first down. After Henry's lone touchdown, Ott weaved his way through traffic to set his offense up with an excellent kick return. After dropping what looked like a sure touchdown earlier in the game, Ott made up for it with a catch on a deep crossing route for 60 yards. He would add a short reception on the outside later in the game. Derek Turner RB Breck Turner and the entire running game struggled in the first half, but Turner made a couple of cutbacks on a punt return to get the ball out near midfield. In the second half, he had another multi-cutback punt return to give the Mustangs good field position. Turner then started to find room on the outside of the Henry defense. He got loose on a 40-yard run down the sidelines. Then he got into the end zone by using a hesitation move followed by a cutback to score a 15-yard touchdown. Beau Courneya S Breck Courneya deflected a slant pass from his safety spot. As a result of the deflection, Breck almost came up with an interception. Courneya picked up an interception of his own early in the second half. He was effective supporting the running game too – especially on an inside running play late in the game. Darnell Mosley LB Henry Outside of maybe McKenna, Mosley had the most impact on the game. He was a big part of Breck's first-half offensive struggles. From an outside linebacker spot, I counted four sacks. He had two sacks in each half. He also combined on a tackle on a sweep for a short gain. Then he was in the backfield to make a solo tackle for loss. Mosley read an end-around. Not only did he hold the edge, but he also made the tackle for a loss.
