The 2023 football season was another struggle for Nathan Hale but they certainly took positive steps. Despite an 0-10 record, the Rangers were much more competitive than we've seen over the past few years. They were in multiple games and came up just short of securing the win. The Rangers had close games with fellow Tulsa Public Schools programs East Central and Edison. The nine-point loss to Edison was the first time in a while that the Rangers were within single digits at the end of the game. So while we're not here to sugar coat the 2023 season, it was still another winless year, there were also signs that this is a program that is turning things around and they could end up taking another step forward and being much more competitive in 2024.

2024 OUTLOOK

As we look ahead to the 2024 season, we mentioned that there is reason to be optimistic for what could be ahead for the Rangers. Nine starters are back on the offensive side of the ball and another eight starters are back on defense. And the Rangers have some absolute stars on both sides of the ball. The offensive line is anchored by one of the top 2025 OL prospects in the state and they have a few other playmakers that are returning with plenty of experience and playmaking ability. Nathan Hale was slated to be in Class 4A this season but that changed this spring and they find themselves back up in Class 5A. So the path to the playoffs is going to be a challenging one yet again but we are confident that Nathan Hale is going to take another positive step this fall. This is a team that is starving for their first win since the 2019 season. We think that first win could come as soon as week zero in the season opener.

[player_tooltip player_id='587269' first='Carmello' last='Williamson'] has been on a player on our radar since the end of his freshman season. Williamson is going to be a three-year starter for the Rangers when he takes the field this fall and was very productive from the linebacker position last season. Williamson finished the 2023 season with nearly 50 tackles. He also had five sacks and eight tackles for loss. We've seen Williamson line up as an edge runner or further away as an outside linebacker. Either way, the Nathan Hale junior has the ability to be a game-wrecker on the defensive side of the ball.

2025 standout [player_tooltip player_id='1160818' first='Deon' last='Franklin'] is one of the more underrated athletes in the Tulsa area. After seeing Franklin in person in a team camp setting, Franklin has the ability to be the best athlete on the field at any given moment. On offense, look for Franklin to be a gamechanger at the wide receiver position. But he also has the versatility to line up in multiple spots on that side of the ball. On defense, Franklin is a ball hawk at the safety position. Last year, he had 300 yards receiving and three touchdowns. On defense, he had two interceptions and is hungry for more in 2024.

2024 SCHEDULE/GAMES TO CIRCLE

Aug. 29 - Daniel Webster
- We mentioned how Nathan Hale could see their first win since 2019 come as early as week zero. So needless to say, the season opener against Daniel Webster is going to be a game to circle heading into this season. A common theme in this preview has been potential. The Rangers certainly have the potential to take that next step and it starts here in the first game.
Sept. 6 - AT East Central
Sept. 20 - Skiatook
Sept. 26 - AT Memorial
Oct. 4 - Claremore
- Nathan Hale will host Claremore in week five for a district showdown. Claremore made a run to the 5A semifinals in 2023 but they lost a very talented senior class to graduation. How serious are the Rangers in the Class 5A picture? This district clash will go a long way to answering that question. A win here could put Nathan Hale on the path to their first playoff appearance since 2009.
Oct. 11 - AT Del City
Oct. 17 - Pryor
Oct. 24 - AT W. Rogers
- The W. Rogers story should be one that gives Nathan Hale fans hope looking ahead to the 2024 season. W. Rogers had been a program that dealt with loss after loss but they turned things around in the last two years. Late in the season, the Rangers square off with the Ropers and it ends up being a showdown between TPS programs that have had some down years but have signs of life.
Nov. 1 - Collinsville
Nov. 8 - AT Tahlequah

NOTABLE

This has been a notable storyline in several team previews over the last month. Nathan Hale began this year thinking they would be in Class 4A after dropping down from 5A in the latest redistricting shuffle last summer. But when several OKC-area private schools won a court case centered around “Rule 14” things got shifted in a major way. Not only were several private schools moved into different classes but the OSSAA used the latest ADM numbers from October to create the new classifications for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Because of that, Nathan Hale finds themselves right back in Class 5A and with a lot of the same teams they've been running against over the last several seasons. The 2024 season would have been Nathan Hale's first season outside of Class 5A in over two decades but that possibility came to an end in a courtroom in Oklahoma City.
