Traditionally, one of the deepest position groups in North Carolina has been the wide receiver position and 2024 doesn't look like it will be an exception. Across the state, there are likely a few dozen players who go from single-digit receptions last year to elite playmakers. So while it's difficult,. we've tried to narrow our list of breakout candidates down to five. Who knows? Maybe we'll make a part two.

Sifford had a better junior year than might be expected on a "breakout receivers" list, but deserves recognition here because he hasn't really gotten it so far in his career. A strong camp season landed him his first offer from Carleton in Minnesota but teams in the southeast should discover him soon. Sifford can flat out fly and I expect him to run a more full route tree in 2024. Expect huge things from him this fall.

Sometimes, all you need is an opportunity, especially when on a deep team and Coppedge will have the opportunity this season. He's explosive not just after the catch, but also out of his breaks giving him route running upside, even if he hasn't had many opportunities to showcase that on varsity. he should get plenty of run this year and

If you're looking for one guy in the state that could go from role player to elite playmaker, it might be Thompson. He's a smooth route runner who flashes the suddenness and burst that all the elite separators have. He creates space well and has solid hands. The next step is to continue working on his body control as he shields defenders from passes. He earned a Charlotte offer after camping there this summer.

Saunders is one of the best 2027 receivers you probably haven't heard of. A multi-sport athlete, Saunders is excellent in both the long jump and 200 meters and those skills translate to the field. He excels with the ball in the air and is improving as a route runner, a skill he should display this fall as a sophomore.

Young has great size and speed and is poised to take the next step as a junior. He flashed last year, both in the slot and on the outside, but this year should take over as a full-time starter and will have plenty of opportunities to become a consistent weapon for a Patriot team that looks like it could make some noise in 2024. His cuts at the top of his routes are crisp and he excels as a separator. Expect a huge year from the junior in 2024.
