So, to prepare for the season, we will be doing Team Previews up until the first kickoff. In these previews, we will cover several topics, including a recap of the team's 2023 season, a look at the next season, team schedules, preseason awards, and players to watch.

Here is the 2024 Elkhorn South Storm Team Preview:

2023 Recap & 2024 Outlook:

The 2023 Elkhorn South team was a resilient one, making the state championship game after losing their starting quarterback only three games into the season. They adapted extremely well as a team and were even able to avenge their only regular-season loss to Millard South by beating them in the semifinals and punching their ticket to Memorial Stadium. The Storm lost a tremendous amount of talent, including players heading to P4 schools, FCS, and other high-level programs. Despite losing a big senior class, the Storm also retains quite a few starters and tons of depth players who saw varsity time during blowout wins and look ready to step right into big roles this year. They bring back their starting QB from last season in [player_tooltip player_id='236546' first='Madden' last='Riggs'] and one of the best 1-2 punches at RB with [player_tooltip player_id='245867' first='Gavin' last='Shanahan'] and [player_tooltip player_id='488108' first='Jaydon' last='Sutko']. Defensively they have playmakers at every level with players like [player_tooltip player_id='795607' first='Cooper' last='Perrien'] (DL), [player_tooltip player_id='795608' first='Tristan' last='Brewer'] (DL), [player_tooltip player_id='319549' first='McCorter' last='Goeser'] (LB), [player_tooltip player_id='319552' first='Devin' last='Meier'] (LB), [player_tooltip player_id='319547' first='Brayden' last='DePerno'] (DB), and [player_tooltip player_id='245877' first='Landon' last='Tate'] (DB/ATH) all ready to swarm to the ball on one of the stingiest defenses in Class A. Elkhorn South should once again be in the thick of the playoff race, although they will face a tougher road this season as they open the season with four straight games against playoff teams from last year and will have a chance to avenge their championship game loss to Omaha Westside.

Players to Watch:

[player_tooltip player_id='236546' first='Madden' last='Riggs'] (2025 - QB - 6'3" 200 lbs - Twitter) was thrown into the starting role early in the season after an unfortunate injury and took the challenge head-on as he helped lead the Storm to the state championship game. Madden showed tremendous progression and growing confidence with every week and ended his junior season with 1,003 passing yards and 13 touchdowns through the air. Madden displays excellent arm talent that allows him to deliver an accurate and timely ball for his receivers. So far, Riggs has earned offers from Minnesota State-Moorhead, Pitt State, and Minnesota State-Mankato and will likely add more!

[player_tooltip player_id='245867' first='Gavin' last='Shanahan'] (2025 - RB/FS—5'10" 190 lbs—Twitter) is the senior member of one of the best running back tandems in the state. Gavin provides the "lightning" to the electric duo with his ability to slice through defenses with his elite twitch and speed. Gavin is a shifty back who runs with great balance, which allows him to stay upright through contact and elite vision to find open lanes. Shanahan ended his junior campaign with 437 yards on 70 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns. Gavin has certainly opened some eyes this offseason as he's earned offers from Dordt, Northwestern College, and Morningside.

[player_tooltip player_id='488108' first='Jaydon' last='Sutko'] (2026 - RB - 6'1" 190 lbs - Twitter) is the "thunder" part of the Thunder and Lightning tandem. At 6'2 and 205 lbs, Jaydon is an absolute handful to try to bring down. However, Jaydon isn't just a physical back as he emerged as one of the fastest players in the state with a 10.88 100m dash and 21.91 200m dash. The speed is evident on the gridiron, as shown by his ability to break away from defenses once he's cleared the first wave of defenders and how he can make defenders miss. Sutko finished his sophomore season with 425 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on 74 carries. Wouldn't be surprised to see him also making plays on defense this season.

[player_tooltip player_id='319549' first='McCorter' last='Goeser'] (2025 - LB - 6'1" 220 lbs - Twitter) has seen a massive boost in his recruitment this offseason with offers from North Dakota State, Minot State, Minnesota Duluth, Bemidji State, Northern State, Sioux Falls, Augustana, Southwest Minnesota State, and Wayne State. This fast rise comes as a result of a great camp cycle and a breakout junior season in which he recorded 96 tackles, 13 TFLs, 2 sacks, and an interception. McCorter is an old-school 'backer who plays fast, physical, and with an intense motor. He's a very well-rounded linebacker who can be a downhill thumper but also has the athleticism to drop back in coverage and hang with tight ends and backs. Should be a one of the main leaders on the defense!

[player_tooltip player_id='795607' first='Cooper' last='Perrien'] (2026 - DL/OL - 6'0" 220 lbs - Twitter) is another player who earned a significant role as a sophomore. 2026 DL/OL [player_tooltip player_id='795607' first='Cooper' last='Perrien'] is coming off a great 2023 season in which he racked up 55 tackles, 3 TFLs, 3 sacks, and a fumble recovery. Cooper, even as an "undersized" interior lineman, did a fantastic job playing defensive tackle last season, where he displayed great power and use of leverage to win his matchups. He is quick to fire off the ball and always seems to have his hands ready to shoot. I think we'll see even more of Cooper next season with a bigger role on the offensive line.
 <!-- wp:acf/hudl {"name":"acf/hudl","data":{"embed_code":"u003ciframe
