And it’s not always a possibility.
Along every edge of South Carolina and all spots in between are schools who either have the types of athletes who are talented enough to play offense and defense or simply need the two-way guys to increase the team’s chances of success.
Or a combination of the two.
The next stop in this five-part series is a look at the Class 4A standouts who are not only asked but expected to stay on the field.
Jordan Crim Jordan Crim 6'1" | 160 lbs | DB Camden | 2025 State SC DB/WR, Camden
Crim won’t be the only player on this list who wasn’t in Class 4A last season. Camden’s jump to the next class up – combined with a depletion of offensive standouts from last season – means he’s likely to do much more than his 10 receptions for 206 yards and three touchdowns from last year. He’s well known for his prowess at safety, where he had 87 tackles and four picks as a junior. Oddly enough, thanks to defensive changes, we think his numbers there rise, as well.
Trevon Williamson Trevon Williamson 5'11" | 200 lbs | RB Gilbert | 2027 State SC RB/LB, Gilbert
There might not have been a freshman last fall who fits this category better than Williamson (pictured). Most everyone knows about his rushing acumen, as he finished the season with 1,401 yards and 20 touchdowns while averaging just shy of eight yards per carry. He occasionally split out wide and/or caught the ball out of the backfield, helping him add another 222 yards and five more scores receiving. What gets lost in the shuffle, though, is his 54 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, five pass break ups and a forced fumble. Who knows what the next three seasons look like for him.
Armoni Weaver Armoni Weaver 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Westside | 2025 State SC and Chamarryus Bomar Chamarryus Bomar 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Westside | 2025 State SC WR/DB, Westside
The pair transferred to Westside over the winter. Most of the time, we slow our roll a bit with transfers. But not with these two. That’s because all they did at Class 5A Byrnes last fall was catch 1,163 yards worth of passes for nine touchdowns (both figures accounting for half the Rebel’s totals as a team) and record 49 total tackles and three interceptions. Most expect them to be a little more offensive-centric at Westside given what the defending state champs have coming back. But until we know for sure they aren’t playing defense, we have multiple seasons of the opposite ringing true.
Avery Alexander Avery Alexander 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Lancaster | 2025 State SC DB/WR, Lancaster
Alexander is 6-foot and 180 pounds. He’s got excellent break skills as a corner or safety (ask Ridge View). He can run solid routes. There’s already an established chemistry with Bruins quarterback RJ Brown RJ Brown 5'8" | 195 lbs | QB Lancaster | 2026 State SC (a rising junior). And Lancaster is coming into 2024 with some momentum on its side after a run to the third round of the playoffs. Alexander’s a senior now and going to take on some of the duties held previously held by the now-departed leaders.
Zion Job Zion Job 5'10" | 185 lbs | ATH Gray Collegiate | 2025 State SC WR/DB, Gray Collegiate
After getting eased into varsity action as a freshman and sophomore, we got more of an all-inclusive picture of Job last fall during his junior campaign. He hauled in 38 passes for 512 yards and two touchdowns on offense and put up 29 tackles and a pair of interceptions on defense. We’re still in a bit of a holding pattern as Gray moves up to Class 4A. But we don’t think first-year coach De’Angelo Bryant is a fan of having his athletes with him on the sideline.
J’Zavien Currence J’Zavien Currence 6'2" | 190 lbs | ATH South Pointe | 2026 State SC DB/WR, South Pointe
South Pointe has never made a point to hide its best athletes. And Currence, a rising sophomore with 36 offers (as of last check) certainly qualifies. As a sophomore, he caught some passes, rushed a handful more and even threw a few on offense out of special sets built for him. Tack on his 67 tackles, five tackles for loss and five picks, and he certainly qualifies as a two-way threat.
Da’Marion Coe Da’Marion Coe 5'9" | 175 lbs | DB Hartsville | 2025 State SC DB/WR/RB/ST, Hartsville
While nothing is set in stone just yet, the Red Foxes intend to use Coe some on offense this year, giving him his first real taste of it on Friday nights. And while we’ve mostly seen him at safety, we’ve had three years of experience watching him with the ball in his hands on kick returns to know he’s special in the open field. No matter how he’s used on offense, he’s going to make an impact.
PJ Chancellor PJ Chancellor 5'9" | 145 lbs | ATH Daniel | 2027 State SC DB/WR, Daniel
With Daniel moving up to Class 4A, it’s safe to say the Lions aren’t exactly shaking over the elevated competition. This is a team that has lost one game in four season and its developmental program is obviously working. The pattern with Chancellor follows plenty before him. Get him on the field as much as possible early so when he’s a bigger piece of the pie, he’s ready. His introduction to varsity ball included 14 tackles and a pick and 32 receptions for 340 yards and three touchdowns.
