His ability to burst out of his stance in the run game and create a positive surge in the trenches right from the point of contact is special. James possesses an impressive ability to stay on blocks and even when he gets off balance you see his ability to regather himself while still performing the block. The OL is also a nimble, dancing bear in pass protection. His body control aids him hugely in that part of his game as he mirrors edge rushers effortlessly. James is an outstanding prospect with a slew of Power 4 offers to choose from at this point.

James is another athlete who could fit a few of these areas, but his comfort in his pass protection shines most. The 6’4″ 300 lbs junior is a trustworthy protector on the edge. He has the easy athleticism and body control to be able to get deep to cut off speed rushers and not get caught reaching. When he does get out of position while engaged he has the strength to be able to reset himself. The anchor strength also allows him to negate bull rush attempts. Thomas also does a great job of getting hands on and controlling where his opponent goes and also reacting to counter moves and initial pass rush moves. Having our perfect recruit pass protect like James is a must.

James can move in every direction smoothly and efficiently and his ability to change direction looks easy despite the massive frame. The sophomore is already so patient and confident in his athleticism too. We don’t see him reaching for defenders. Instead he trusts his feet to get him where he needs to be. Then he delivers a powerful initial punch and can remove DL from the LOS with his powerful leg drive. James looks every bit the part of a young Power 4 prospect. Big things ahead for him.
