Returning Contributors: The Montclair Mounties Linemen

Leading the team to an 8-4 final record and a trip to the sectional finals, it was more of the same of what we have come to know of Mountie Football.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Their magical season came to an end on the road in a 7-point loss to eventual Group V state runner-up Passaic County Tech. When at the nose Green does an exceptional job of knocking back-blocking centers to where they came from. From there we see Green use the arm over or rip to scrape down the line of scrimmage in pursuit of the ball carrier. When pass rushing he does a solid job of taking the inside lane. With as big, strong, and as much momentum Green can generate I would love to see him refine using his hands. Last year Pagan was credited with 27.5 tackles (12 solos), 1 FF, 0.5 sacks, and 0.5 TFL. Pagan excels at using his hands when engaging with blockers. This allows him to feel pressure and react accordingly. Pagan has enough strength to muscle and throw linemen off of him. When at tight end I appreciate the effort he puts forth, working to seal edges and cut off angles. An immediate area that Pagan will see immediate results next year is to target his Vee of the neck target. On film it appears that Quiros does many things well. First we see that he slants low-to-high and exaggerates the follow through of his rip. He also is a speed rush threat, as evidenced by oversetting offensive tackles. Seeing the inside lane open up, Quiros takes advantage of it by selling, and then hitting, the spin move. Fundamentally sound, we see him routinely squeeze down when unblocked. Lastly, an athlete, Quiros redirects well for a defensive end. When asked to block on offense Quiros does a really good job of setting an edge on reach/toss plays. An element I think Quiros could stand to add to his game is cleaning up the wrong arm and u-turn technique. Last fall Davis was credited with 54 tackles (24 solo), 11 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 3 FF, and 1 FR. His athleticism allows him to redirect well - something the Mounties defense accents from Davis' game - as he is used as a backside bender very often, making sure to only do so flat down the line of scrimmage. Similarly, he also plays the mesh point well, applying the surf technique, when facing option teams. When closing in on either quarterbacks or rushers from the backside, Davis looks to make a havoc play by punching and attacking the ball. When he is not getting home on quarterbacks Davis is privy to matching the hand as he deflects many pass attempts. Like his bookend teammate Quiros, I would encourage Davis to spill oncoming kick out blockers. Right now we see Davis display his athleticism to work outside-in to make a tackle; however, utilizing a spill and u-turn might be something more sound that colleges would look for.
