The group, on the face, looks to be as deep of a secondary recruiting class as the state has had in quite some time. Let’s take a look at who some of the 2023 defensive back lead prospects are currently.
Lester Miller Lester Miller 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Brandon | 2023 State MS | Brandon
As Miller sees his role grow in the next year at Brandon expect to hear his name much more frequently. Miller has the build that you draw up as a next level corner and a good athletic skillset. Fluidity throughout the frame and easy burst/quickness off the ball. Changes directions well. Moves easy and freely down field. Active with arms/hands. Does a great job getting his head turned and locating the ball. The intangibles are there with his overall physical and athletic makeup, will mature and develop as he sees more snaps. Miller shows the signs you want to see based off of Sophomore year film. Potential to be big time recruit in state by the time his Senior year rolls around.
Zech Pratt Zech Pratt 6'1" | 165 lbs | DB Tupelo | 2023 State MS | Tupelo
Pratt is one of the leaders on a Tupelo defense that is loaded with Division 1 level talent. Against some of the best competition in the state Pratt shined with nearly 50 tackles, 13 PD’s, 2 FF’s and 1 INT. last season. Pratt has a prototype safety build with good length to add. The Golden Wave rising junior does a nice job in pass coverage typically dropping down to pickup the slot, as well as stepping in to help stop the run. Pratt has versatile athleticism and above average feet that can go from dead still to top speed swiftly. The Tupelo native sees the field extremely well and shows the reactive athleticism in ways that scouts love. A lot of untapped potential is wrapped up in Pratt.
Nic Townsend Nic Townsend 6'0" | 150 lbs | DB Pontotoc | 2023 State MS | Pontotoc
Coach Jeff Carter has a guy in Townsend who is as athletic as any DB the state currently has to offer. Speed is definitely not in question for the Warriors’ defensive back. Although more on the lean side frame wise, he plays much bigger than he is. Townsend knows how to use his body to be disruptive in throwing lanes and in one on ones out wide. Overall athleticism makes up for anything lost by lack of size, even with two more years to grow physically. Townsend has that impressive ability to know where the ball is going before it is thrown. Next level fundamentals already with definite potential to be solid D1 corner. Expect to see recruitment blow up as junior season takes place.
