The Sandhills/Thedford Knights capped off their incredible run in the playoffs with a huge win in the Class D2 State Championship. Wynot came into the game with an 11-0 undefeated record and one of the more prolific offenses in Class D2. Sandhills/Thedford entered the game after taking down high-seeded Johnson-Brock and South Loup, as well as a tough Lourdes Central Catholic team. Wynot QB Dylan Heine Dylan Heine 5'10" | 125 lbs | QB Wynot | 2024 NE led the Blue Devils on a strong drive that ended in a Carson Wieseler touchdown. From then on it was all the Kyle Cox Kyle Cox 160 lbs | QB Sandhills/Thedford | 2025 State NE show, as he would go on to post a record-shattering night. The Knights rushed all the way to a dominant 50-12 win and the first football state championship in school history!
Check out my stand out players from the game:
Player of the Game:
Kyle Cox Kyle Cox 160 lbs | QB Sandhills/Thedford | 2025 State NE | 2025 | QB/ATH | Sandhills/Thedford | 5’10” 162 lbs
– 65 carries, 486 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns, 10 tackles, 3 PBUs, and an interception.
– This should be no surprise as Kyle served basically as the entire offensive gameplan for the Knights. He carried the ball 65 times as the Blue Devil defense had no answer for the Cox and the Knight’s rushing attack.
– Kyle pounded away at the Wynot defense behind a series of super physical runs between the middle. He is stronger than people expect and can break through tackle attempts and always seems to fall forward.
– He’s also very twitchy. Kyle can shift and juke with ease when he sees an open lane. Nice burst coming out of his cuts.
– On defense, Kyle does a great job covering the entire field from the safety position. He is very quick to break on the ball and shows great ball skills.
Notable Standouts:
Carson Wieseler | 2024 | WR/ATH | Wynot
– 8 receptions, 77 receiving yards, a receiving touchdown, 16 tackles, and forced/recovered a fumble.
– Carson was the Blue Devil’s most productive player on both sides of the ball.
– On offense, he is a reliable target with good hands. I think he would be a great slot receiver at the next level.
– Defensively, he displayed great range and instincts.
Rhett McFadden Rhett McFadden 5'11" | 195 lbs | LB Sandhills/Thedford | 2024 State NE | 2024 | LB | Sandhills/Thedford | 5’11” 195 lbs
– 11 tackles, a TFL, and a PBU
– Rhett was the enforcer for this suffocating Knight’s defense.
– Very good job defending downhill and plugging in gaps.
– Deceivingly rangy. He can fly to the ball and make plays even when coming off the backside of the play.
– Secure tackler with great technique.
Brady Dahlberg Brady Dahlberg 6'5" | 230 lbs | TE Sandhills/Thedford | 2024 State NE | 2024 | TE/DL | Sandhills/Thedford | 6’5″ 230 lbs
– 4 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, and 1.5 sacks.
– Brady’s stat sheet numbers don’t tell the entire story. He was a pivotal player in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
– On offense, Brady did a great job blocking and leading the way for a historic rushing performance. Dahlberg displayed top-tier lateral quickness and burst when moving into the second level to block.
– Very strong player with a good use of leverage.
– We saw him mostly blocking this game, but don’t be fooled, Brady is a pretty athletic player who can also be an asset as a tight end.
– Defensively, Dahlberg does a great job filling his gaps. He stays very active throughout the play with a great motor.
