Three weeks into the season, several sophomores across Illinois have already established themselves as impact players on the defensive side of the football. From tackling machines in the middle of the defense to young pass rushers living in opposing backfields, these 2029 prospects have put together impressive starts.

Brandon Parker — Rockford Auburn

Parker has been one of the most disruptive sophomore defenders in the state through three games. He has piled up 30 tackles, including 23 solo stops, but the number that really stands out is his eight tackles for loss. Parker has also recorded a sack, giving him an impressive combination of tackle production and plays behind the line of scrimmage.

[player_tooltip player_id='2174838' first='Tanner' last='Cox'] — St. Teresa

Few sophomores have been around the football more than Cox to begin the season. Through three games, he has already accumulated 38 tackles, averaging 12.7 per game. Twenty-two of those stops have been solo tackles, and he's also added a tackle for loss. It's been an extremely productive opening stretch for the young St. Teresa defender.

Capone Mitchell — Jacksonville

Mitchell's production through just two games immediately grabs your attention. The Jacksonville sophomore has recorded 17 tackles, but an incredible eight of those have come for a loss. He's also gotten home for six sacks, giving him one of the most disruptive statistical starts of any sophomore defender on the list.

Tate Yoder — Champaign Central

Yoder has wasted little time making his presence felt. In only two games, the sophomore has collected 19 tackles, including 13 solo stops, while producing five tackles for loss and three sacks. Averaging 9.5 tackles per game while also generating that type of backfield production makes Yoder an intriguing young defender to continue following.

[player_tooltip player_id='2229453' first='Gabriel' last='Woodhouse'] Jr. — Hillcrest

Woodhouse has been a problem coming off the edge for Hillcrest. Through two games, he's made 16 tackles—and every one of them has been credited as a solo stop. He's added five tackles for loss and three sacks, giving him an impressive combination of physicality and backfield disruption early in his sophomore season.

Alonzo Lofton — Civic Memorial

Lofton has provided steady production through the first three games, collecting 26 tackles while averaging 8.7 stops per contest. He's been active around the line of scrimmage as well, recording three tackles for loss and a sack. With 13 solo and 13 assisted tackles, Lofton has consistently found his way to the football.

Rocco Giannavola — Marshall

Giannavola rounds out the group after an impressive three-game opening stretch. The Marshall sophomore has registered 28 tackles, with 21 coming as solo stops, and has added four tackles for loss. Averaging better than nine tackles per game this early in his varsity career is a strong indication of the impact he's already making on the Marshall defense.

Three weeks into the season, several sophomores across Illinois have already established themselves as impact players on the defensive side of the football. From tackling machines in the middle of the defense to young pass rushers living in opposing backfields, these 2029 prospects have put together impressive starts.
