Opening Week Gunslinger QB Performances

The opening week of the 2026 season did not disappoint as many of the state's best gunslinger QBs picked up where they left off a year ago with standout games last week.   There were also numerous rising-star quarterbacks who looked sharp in their varsity debuts.   The first game of the season can be a challenge, as offenses are still working to hit on all cylinders and new players are getting incorporated into the game plan.   The operative words being "can be a challenge" as for many it was smooth sailing, producing big stat lines in a winning cause.   For others, the standout performances were delivered but obscured in losing efforts.   In this report, we are taking a quick look at who some of the state's top gunslingers were in week one.   So, without further adieu, let's check out how these guys did last week:     [player_tooltip player_id='2127985' first='Brixton' last='Schwinn']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/brixton-schwinn/"></a> , 6'3, 205, QB/ATH, Jefferson West, '29, the state's top freshman QB from a year ago didn't waste any time reinforcing his high-ceiling game in leading his team to a lop-sided 41-8 win over Royal Valley in the season opener last week. On the night he carved up the Panther defense going 14 of 19 (73%) for 271 yards, 5 TD passes and carried the ball 10 times for 65 yards, all in the first half as he was subbed out after the first drive of the second period. After a season when he completed 175 of 293 for 2,388 yards and 32 TDs, he appears well on his way to blowing those numbers out of the water this fall.     Isaac Duncan, 6'5, 200, QB/ATH, Valley Center, '29, up next is a young gun who is flying under the radar so far but after last week's performance, that will change in a hurry, as he led the Hornets to a thrilling 36-34 win at Newton, in his starting debut. For the night he completed 20 of 35 passes for 394 yds, 5 TD passes and had a blistering 136 passer rating. Stepping up big were his lethal wideouts, [player_tooltip player_id='1530379' first='Ray' last='Logan'], 5'11, 170, WR/DB/ATH, VC, '27, who caught 7 passes for a state-leading 178 yds, scored a pair of TDs and had 55 yds rushing; and the #3 receiver in the state, [player_tooltip player_id='1433331' first='Spencer' last='Crumrine'], 5'10, 165, WR/ATH, '27, who caught 6 passes for 168 yards and scored 3 TDs. These guys are going to have a game-breaking passing attack this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='2128205' first='Chase' last='Cain']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/chase-cain/"></a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/chase-cain/"></a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/chase-cain/"></a> , 6'1, 175, QB/ATH, Olathe North, '29, it wasn't the start this multi-sport, dual-threat quarterback had envisioned, as he and his teammates lost a tough match up with Shawnee Mission East last Thursday 28-42, but he played well in the season debut, completing 19 of 32 passes (60%) for 281 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. Last year he backed up a senior but picked up valuable varsity experience late in the year after decimating defenses at the JV level for 1,800+ total yards and 24 touchdowns. With his versatile, athletic game, I am expecting him to deliver an impressive season this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='2342025' first='Ethan' last='O'Hara'], 6'1, 195, QB/ATH, Blue Valley North, '28, up first for the juniors is another gunslinger flying under the radar somewhat but after helping lead his team to a 31-10 win over BVSW last week that won't last long. For the night he completed 11 passes in 19 attempts for 287 yds, threw 2 TD passes and was named the team's Offensive Player of the Week. Stepping up in the passing attack was Drake commit and versatile hybrid receiver, [player_tooltip player_id='1556861' first='Wes' last='Riegel'], 6'3”, 195, WR/ATH, BVN, ‘27,  who hauled in 3 passes for a team-leading 104 yards and a TD; and dangerous wideout Colton Nichols, 6'4, 200, WR/ATH, BVN, '27, who caught 3 passes for 77 yards and a score, after catching 41 passes for 706 yards and three TDs a year ago. These guys are going to be en fuego this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='2101924' first='Joey' last='Dooley']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/joey-dooley/"></a> , 6'3, 195, QB, Lawrence, '28, next up for the juniors is a baller who picked up where he ended last fall, completing 19 of 23 passes (83%) for 255 yards and 3 touchdown passes in a tough 26-28 loss to powerhouse Gardner Edgerton. He caught my eye last year when he completed 71 passes in 127 attempts, for 850 yards, fired seven TD's and only threw four picks all year. He also added 491 yards rushing for 1,400+ APYs and 13 TD's in only eight games. After a summer fine-tuning his game working out with older brother Jackson Dooley, who just finished a record-setting, All-American senior year for Benedictine, this guy is going to put on a show this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='1700711' first='Dan' last='Sogard']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/dan-sogard/"></a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/dan-sogard/"></a> , 6'2”, 185, QB, Blue Valley, '27, up first for the senior gunslingers is one of the top returning passers in the state who delivered an efficient game-one performance in leading his team to a 51-24 win over Blue Valley Northwest, completing 9 of 12 passes for 261 yds, 4 TDs, 0 picks, and averaged 29 yds per completion. He aired it out to his ace receiving tandem last week as [player_tooltip player_id='1263895' first='Jordan' last='Lockett'], 6'0, 170, WR/ATH, BV, '27, a South Dakota State commit, caught 3 passes for 87 yards and a TD and returned a kickoff 99 yards for another score; and bro [player_tooltip player_id='1341050' first='Jacob' last='Lockett'], 6'1, 175, WR/ATH, BV, '27, an Old Dominion commit who averaged 40 yards per reception on a pair of catches and scored a TD. These guys are going to be electric this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='2063081' first='Cale' last='Ketter']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/cale-ketter/"></a> , 6'2, 180, QB, Topeka Seaman, '27, up next for the seniors is a gunslinger who I have been impressed with but unfortunately started the 2026 season on a losing note last week, 34-48 to a strong De Soto team. Along the way he pulled out all the stops, completing 34 of 48 passes for an eye-popping 456 yards and 5 TDs. It was more of what teams are used to seeing, as last year year he fired 136 completions in 231 attempts (62%) for 2,013 yards and 23 TD passes to only six interceptions for an impressive 115 passer rating. Against De Soto the balls were delivered early and often as standout receiver [player_tooltip player_id='933824' first='Coy' last='Barta'], 6'3, 175, WR/ATH, '27, an Emporia State commit, hauled in 11 receptions for 267 yards and 2 scores, including one from 63 yards out. These guys are going to get vertical in a hurry this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='1166125' first='Colt' last='Curry']<a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/colt-curry/"></a> <a href="https://prepredzone.com/player/colt-curry/"></a> , 6'2, 205, QB, Maize, '27, after a strong off-season following an injury-shortened junior year, he was more than ready to showcase his game this fall and did not disappoint as he led the Eagles to a convincing 28-7 win over Andover Central last week. He stepped up and produced as expected, completing 11 of 19 passes for 160 yards and a TD and rushed for 54 yards and another score. He hooked up with all-purpose back Demarye Smith, 6'0, 185, RB/DB, Maize, '27, on a 72-yard TD pass, with Smith adding 81 yards on 20 carries and a pair of receptions. These guys are going to lead a high-octane offense that is going to be trouble for opposing defenses this fall.   [player_tooltip player_id='1656510' first='Bryis' last='Alford'], QB/LB, 6'0,185, Baldwin,'27, [PICTURED ABOVE] up next for the senior QBs is one of the top dual-threats in the state who helped lead his team to a 54-6 win over Hiawatha last week. In limited playing time he cruised for 145 yards rushing on a scant 6 carries (24+ per carry) for a pair of scores and was 4 of 7 passing for 51 yards and a TD. He is coming off a strong junior year when he completed 79 of 135 attempts for 1320 yards, 18 TD passes and only one pick for a sky-high passer rating of 130. He also added 566 yards on 60 carries, and scored six more TD's, to give him 1,800+ yards of total offense and 24 total touchdowns. This rising star is ready to bring the fireworks this fall.     [player_tooltip player_id='1987964' first='Grady' last='Myers'] , 5'10, 170, RB/DB, Mulvane, '27, after a season when he rushed and received for 1,342 yards and scored 20 TDs as an all-purpose back, he switched positions to play quarterback after all-state bro Manny graduated. He wasted little time getting adjusted to his new position, as he led his team to a solid win over Chanute 24-12 last week in the season opener when he ran and passed for 100+ yards and scored two touchdowns. With the varsatility to play in the secondary, return kicks and punts and play multiple positions on offense, he may be called on to do a little bit of everything this year. This guy plays an athletic game and has the speed and arm to dismantle defenses week in and week out.
