Five Teams We Got Completely Wrong

It also means that we've had a month of football to break down and see what we've gotten right but more importantly, what we've gotten wrong. On Saturday, <a href="https://youtube.com/live/myX7-tDi1MA?feature=share" data-type="link" data-id="https://youtube.com/live/myX7-tDi1MA?feature=share">we had our weekly live show on YouTube</a> and we had our overreactions and thoughts from each class following non-district play. This week on the website, we'll have a few articles looking back at the last several weeks. In this breakdown, we're putting the spotlight on five teams that we got wrong heading into this season. Either they weren't on our radar or they were significantly too low on the radar and have emerged as a major player in their class.   CACHE BULLDOGS (3-1)   Cache came into this season with some intrigue behind emerging 2028 star [player_tooltip player_id='1830308' first='Kenyon' last='Sweat'] but they were also coming off a 4-6 season in 2025 and they went 2-8 the year before that. So the Bulldogs didn't have a lot of hype coming into the year but that quickly changed. Cache dominated their first three games, all against 5A opponents. They beat Noble, Duncan and Altus in the first three weeks and all three of those wins were by 20+ points. They also had their rivalry game against powerhouse Elgin and they suffered their first loss of the season, falling 42-10. But this game was close at halftime before the flood gates opened in the second half.   Now, the Bulldogs go into district play with a realistic chance to contend for the district title. They go on the road to face Elk City on Friday night but they are in a district with other ranked teams like Clinton and Weatherford. Coincidentally, they play those two teams in back to back weeks in October. They get both of those games at home and if they go 2-0 in that stretch, it would be hard to fathom them not capturing the district championship. We're a long way from talking playoffs but if they do win the district, they could end up on the opposite side of the top two-ranked teams in Broken Bow and Tuttle. From there, anything can happen.   COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN ROYALS (3-0)   Out of the five teams on this breakdown, you could say that Community Christian is the one that doesn't belong because they were ranked in our 2A-2 preseason rankings. Despite missing the playoffs a year ago, we thought that the Royals had a chance to be much improved this season but we didn't necessarily think that they would already be in the top five following non-district play. But they've climbed up the ranks and enter district play as the #5 team in this class after beating OCS in an exciting overtime game in week zero. They followed that up with a close win over Lindsay before blasting Casady in week three to wrap up a 3-0 start.   The Royals come into district play with a lot of momentum and plenty of firepower as well. They have a relatively young but very talented roster. 2028 running back [player_tooltip player_id='1727336' first='Carson' last='Rehkop'] is coming off a great performance against Casady last week and he's not the only one that has been filling up the stat sheet. The Royals kick off district play on Friday night with a road game against Meeker. On paper, this district looks like it could end up being very competitive from start to finish. In the final week of the regular season, the Royals will go to Cashion and the Wildcats have been a top five team in 2A-2 from the start of the year. It wouldn't be surprising to see that game be a head to head clash for the district championship.   COWETA TIGERS (3-0)   We've already said this on the live show so we're repeating it here. But the Coweta Tigers are the perfect example of why preseason rankings are pretty much worthless. For whatever reason, we did not have Coweta in our preseason top ten in Class 5A and they quickly made sure that our mistake was fixed and it didn't take a full month. They blasted rival Wagoner in week zero and then they went on the road and took down a Pryor team that was a top five preseason team in 5A. After falling down 16-0, they rallied to beat Pryor in a high-scoring affair and now they are getting ready for district play at 3-0. Simply put, they should have been in the preseason rankings and they are now a top five team.   2027 running back [player_tooltip player_id='474870' first='Brock' last='Heilmann'] is leading the way as one of the state's best at finding the end zone through the first few weeks of the season. But what makes this team a top five squad is the fact that he's not alone. This is a very experienced and talented Coweta team and they are about to get tested again on Friday night. The Tigers open up district play against Del City and the Eagles come into this week as a top five team and with a sour taste in their mouth after letting one slip away against Carl Albert last week. So simply put, we have another heavyweight fight coming in Class 5A and Coweta is going to be ready. Don't be surprised if Friday's result ends up deciding the district champion.   DICKSON COMETS (3-0)   There has to be something in the water in Ardmore right now because that town is putting out some high quality football with Ardmore, Plainview and Dickson all getting off to red-hot starts this season. Out of the three, Dickson is definitely a team that we didn't see coming as we headed into the season. Of the five teams on this breakdown, we think that the Comets would be at the top of the list for the biggest surprise team through the first month of the season. They are trying to turn things around after suffering through 12 consecutive losing seasons but it looks like things have turned around based on the explosive start they've had.   The Comets have scored at least 55 points in each of their first three games. The closest game was a 55-21 win in the season opener and 2027 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1831333' first='Baylor' last='Bond'] has been lighting defenses up every week. But the competition is about to get ratcheted up in a major way. The Comets are in the same district as fellow top ten teams Chandler and Washington. And we're going to find out just how serious the Comets are in the 2A-1 race because they play those teams right out of the gate. They will host Chandler on Friday night before going to face 2A powerhouse Washington next week. Those two games will tell us a lot about this team but the Comets do feel like they are on the road to a winning season in 2026.   YUKON MILLERS (4-0)   The Yukon Millers are definitely a team that we got wrong heading into this season. We had them as the #9 team in our 6A-1 preseason rankings (again, preseason rankings mean nothing) but they've already climbed up into the top five. They have gotten off to a really strong start but they got everyone's attention in week one when they beat rival Mustang for the first time in nearly a decade. They kicked a go-ahead field goal with a few minutes left and then blocked Mustang's potential game-winning field goal as time expired. The Millers are 4-0 on the season and they've also already won a district game after beating Edmond Santa Fe last week.   Now, the schedule will start getting tougher, specifically in mid-October. They go to Deer Creek this week and that's a battle of two unbeaten teams. But the two games to circle on the calendar are week seven and week eight. In back to back weeks, the Millers will host Owasso and Jenks. Those two games will tell us how serious the Millers are in the 6A-1 race. They won their first playoff game in decades last year and now they're looking to take the next step. Led by 2028 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1717719' first='Zealand' last='Danielson'] and several other next level players, Yukon looks like a team that has the talent and more importantly the confidence to compete with some of the better teams in Class 6A-1.
