Brown Helps Wren Run Past Lugoff-Elgin

LUGOFF | Wren is going to make a lot of teams get into a street fight with the way they play. They're physical on both lines of scrimmage and have a 1-2 punch of [player_tooltip player_id='1790589' first='Muntu' last='Brown'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1672609' first='Josiah' last='Mosley'] in the backfield that will match up with anyone in the state.   Brown (pictured above) became the workhorse after Mosley went down with an injury in the second half and the senior finished with 178 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries to lead the Hurricanes to an impressive 33-20 road victory over previously undefeated Lugoff-Elgin.   Brown opened the scoring with a 4-yard run and then sealed things with a 33-yard jaunt late in the third quarter.   “I just had to keep going and help this team get another victory,” Brown said. “It's not just the two of us though. We have a lot of guys that make things happen. We didn't have to throw it much tonight, but we can when we need it. I feel like we're well rounded.”   Mosley left in the third quarter with an injury but scored on a 49-yard run in the first quarter and finished with 97 yards on eight carries.   The two are different types of runners. Brown is 6-foot, 200 pounds and is more of a North-South runner that can run through tackles. Mosley is more of a slasher that can make defenders miss and is gone once he gets into the open field as evidenced on his 49-yard TD on his first touch of the contest.   “They're just great guys,” Wren coach Anthony Frate said. “They do everything right. They come to all the service projects. I'm happy for them because you always like to see kids like that become the most successful. It's neat to watch the two of them work through the process.”     Brown said the tandem with Mosley is working because it allows both to stay fresh. But Brown didn't mind talking the bulk of the carries in the second half.   “We give each other breaks and when (Mosley) comes into the game, he's a different type of runner than I am,” Brown said. “The breaks we get allows us to stay fresh and makes defenses prepare for two different styles.”     Those two make the chains move but it's the play of the five starters up front that allows it all to happen. Wren scored on its first two possessions to open a 13-0 lead. Brown accounted for 38 yards on the five-play, 50-yard opening drive. Then after the Hurricanes forced its second straight three-and-out to open the game, Mosley took his first handoff, broke outside and outraced everyone to the end zone.   [player_tooltip player_id='1790580' first='Jacob' last='Owings'] connected with [player_tooltip player_id='1658454' first='Caiden' last='Hill'] on a nice 23-yard seam route that allowed Wren to take a 19-13 lead into the half. Owings opened the scoring in the second half with a 1-yard run before Brown finished the scoring on his 33-yard run late in the third quarter.   “We have players all over and can make plays on both sides of the ball,” Brown said. “Our offensive lineman doesn't get the credit they deserve but they make our lives easier.”   The defensive front that consisted of [player_tooltip player_id='1791054' first='Collins' last='Foster'] [player_tooltip player_id='1791039' first='JT' last='Forrester'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1791001' first='Travys' last='Woodard'] made it difficult for the Demons to hit many explosive plays. Lugoff-Elgin only had two plays of 20 yards or more.   “We're good upfront,” Frate said. “We kept everything in front of us and that helped limit the big plays.”   Lugoff-Elgin played without five starters, including WR [player_tooltip player_id='1603854' first='Eric' last='Richardson'], a Coastal Carolina commitment. Linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='1823864' first='Jace' last='Coleman'] went out with an injury in the first quarter. Fellow linebacker [player_tooltip player_id='2178856' first='Tristan' last='Young'] left the game in the fourth quarter.   But the Demons did have [player_tooltip player_id='1036740' first='Tiyon' last='Fanning'] to carry the offense. The senior finished with 102 yards rushing on 21 carries and added 64 yards on five receptions. He scored on an 11-yard run. QB [player_tooltip player_id='1823858' first='Zach' last='Williams'] threw a 4-yard scoring pass to [player_tooltip player_id='1610229' first='Keenen' last='Cunningham'] and added a 1-yard scoring run on fourth down.      The sophomore was able to display his full skill set with Richardson unable to play. He showed his toughness when he took a big hit after catching a 15-yard crossing pattern in the middle of the field.   He had the longest play of the night for the Demons when he made a great adjustment with the ball in the air and hauled in a 31-yard pass from Williams. He also adjusted to the ball in the air on another pass, drawing a pass interference on the Hurricanes. Lindsay ended up being the leading receiver against Wren with six catches for 74 yards.   Richardson has been the top pass catcher for Lugoff-Elgin, but Lindsay gives them someone else that can stretch the field and make defenses play honestly.
