2029s Doing Damage From Defensive Backfields

When it comes to the corners and safeties in the Prep RedZone South Carolina 2029 rankings, we can see what all the fuss is about.   The production is there, and the offers and interest are following.   Heck, we even have a couple names in the list that up to a month ago had yet to play their first varsity games - and in some cases, already had college commitment opportunities. Needless to say, this positional group is ready for something big.    We pin-pointed it specifically because many of them are doing some things on the fields around the Palmetto State that need to be recognized early. Nearly every player in our rankings at the defensive back designation isn't simply seeing playing time as a sophomore; they're leading their respective secondaries, defenses and teams as a whole.   Let's begin with a global look at all of them before fine-tuning some of our assessments.     BREAKING DOWN THE TOP FIVE    [player_tooltip player_id='1595010' first='Taddrick' last='Gibson'] Dutch Fork   Naturally, we moved Gibson off his top spot in the ranking when we discovered he was out for what looks to be the entirety of his sophomore year. But what we've already seen out of him tells us we need to give him time to return and prove he's still the best defensive back in the class. What he's capable of over the second half of his high school career is clearly TBD. Again, he's earned the right for everyone to find out.    [player_tooltip player_id='1825516' first='Jyree' last='Grady'] River Bluff   Grady has made sure no one is focusing on his height. At all of 5-foot-7 and change, he's a hit-stick defender who already forced a fumble on a player a couple weeks back. He's just as much linebacker as he is safety, and whether he's dropping back or creeping up there's a solid chance he noticed something he thinks he can exploit. His numbers won't always make sense, but his effort is paying dividends for the Gators week after week.   [player_tooltip player_id='1522453' first='Kaylin' last='Culp'] Fairfield Central (pictured)   Every time we turn around, we're noticing Culp doing something else that tells us he's ready for the next level, even as a sophomore in high school. While he still tends to list himself as a receiver first, what he does on defense is going to be his ticket for the rest of this year (if not longer). Opposing teams know not to throw his way after his picked off four passes against four different foes a year ago, and he's a ferocious hitter capable of jarring a ball loose.    [player_tooltip player_id='1825312' first='Ziyre' last='McFadden'] Lake City    Make no mistake about McFadden or the rest of his defensive teammates. The test they'll face the rest of the season will make the early part of the season feel paltry. And while the W-L record might not be where the Panthers want it to be at the end of 2026, McFadden's role in building for the years to come at Lake City has to be recognized. He can play safety in a zone look, match up against a receiver one-on-one or come off the edge to disrupt a backfield.   [player_tooltip player_id='1840728' first='Jaydon' last='Moore'] South Aiken   After Moore spent his freshman season at cross-town Aiken, we were super-curious to see how things would pan out for him in his new digs. He hasn't exactly suffered from an adjustment period. He's helped the Thoroughbreds to a 4-0 start on the strength of a significant defensive improvement. For his part, he's already notched a pick (first part of his reel below), four pass break-ups, a couple tackles for loss and double-digit tackles.    NEW TO THE RANKINGS   [player_tooltip player_id='2370987' first='Joseph' last='Wilson'] Wilson    The Tigers' defensive back room is stacked. Let's start with that. Because for Wilson to push his way onto the field as a sophomore is no easy task. Yet, here he is, starting at corner in a second jammed with experienced seniors. His first career interception came against Hampton County in Week 2. His second came against Hampton County in Week 2. His third came against Darlington in Week 3. You sensing a trend yet?    [player_tooltip player_id='1823975' first='Jamere' last='Jackson'] Greenwood    Jackson earned the nod as the Eagles' starting free safety before the season began, so we took notice. When we started rolling his film from this year, it became apparent that he was only just starting to scratch the surface. Jackson is a great center fielder, able to anticipate some, sure, but also able to react accordingly. He's already blocked a punt on special teams, so his spark-plug ability is prevalent.    [player_tooltip player_id='1825232' first='Izayah' last='Davis'] Lewisville    Davis has the frame to stand out in high school football for the next two and a half seasons, and while the Lions have struggled out of the gate, he's getting some valuable time to grow into his skill set and develop others he hasn't yet mastered. Most importantly, Davis has the ability to flat line a ball carrier when necessary. He's not perfect, but he's got one heck of a start after seeing time as a freshman.    [player_tooltip player_id='1709132' first='Akari' last='Williams'] Carvers Bay    The Bears aren't going to face a ton of pass-first teams, which means Williams has to be ready to turn into a run-first defender often. He's got exactly the type of build to fold into the scheme and make his starting job in the secondary work well. Add in that he's a budding receiver (and a likely candidate to move to quarterback on offense next year), and his time in the rankings was ready to begin.    [player_tooltip player_id='2325418' first='Malikye' last='Robinson'] Berkeley    While Berkeley is busy starting off the year hot with some wins over traditional rivals, it's important to note that players like Robinson are part of the next wave of Stags who will carry this progress through after this season, when a strong crop of seniors run out of eligibility. He's still a bit small at 5-foot-8 and 145 pounds, but his reaction time and ability to put his body in harms way are doing some serious lifting for him right now.     PRIMED TO RISE    [player_tooltip player_id='2180510' first='Jamier' last='Stanley'] James Island    Stanley isn't necessarily built like most high school corners. He's already 6-foot-2 at 15 years old and probably not done growing vertically. He recorded his first career varsity interception on September 4 against Gray Collegiate, but before that point he'd already started to make his presence felt with some heads-up defensive plays that included eight tackles during his first two contests (against Oceanside and South Florence).    [player_tooltip player_id='1858340' first='Jonathan' last='Mason'] St. James    Having already got his feet wet for nine games as a freshman, Mason came into this fall with a nice head of steam, not to mention new head coach and several staff members who wanted to lean into his abilities. As such, Mason has already shown he has no problem doing his job. He put up 24 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, a pass break up and two forced fumbles during the Sharks' first four contests. That includes two 10-tackle games in the early going.   [player_tooltip player_id='1824713' first='Benjamin' last='Sims'] Florence Christian    Most of Sims' highlights to date are on the offensive side of the ball, but they show off an ability to do some things with his length and range that are only going to help him in the secondary, too. He's essentially a professional freelancer, able to make up for busted plays while keeping his eyes where they're supposed to be. He's going to catch passes and pick up some rushing yards. But where he's going to have his biggest impact long term is on defense.   [player_tooltip player_id='1878635' first='Carson' last='McDaniel'] Daniel    The physical and mental leap McDaniel made between the end of last season on JV and the start of his sophomore year with the varsity was monumental. He used some excellent one-on-one showings during some college camps to impress, and he took advantage of the entirety of the offseason to better learn the defensive scheme. Wrap it all together, and he may contend for best corner in the class sooner rather than later.
