Week 1 Provides Historic Nights and Eye-Opening Finishes

What a night of Week 1 football.

Florida was represented well against teams from around the country, while several in-state matchups delivered the type of finishes that remind you why high school football is so special. We saw dominant performances, overtime thrillers, major upsets and a few results that will have people looking at certain programs a little differently heading into Week 2.

Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the opening week.

Historic Night for Lakeland Christian

Lakeland Christian 81, Santa Fe Catholic 7

Lakeland Christian put together one of the most dominant offensive performances of the opening week, running away from Santa Fe Catholic 81-7. The Vikings scored 81 points in their home opener and completely controlled the game from start to finish. MaxPreps confirmed the 81-7 final and noted Lakeland Christian improved to 1-0 with its seventh straight home victory.

For a program that has continued to build momentum, this was about as loud of a way to open the season as you could ask for.

Carol City Continues to Back Up the Hype

Carol City 38, Mainland 3

Carol City has now given us two straight weeks of reasons to believe the buzz surrounding this team is real.

The Chiefs traveled to Daytona Beach and completely controlled Mainland, rolling to a 38-3 victory. Carol City entered the night with plenty of attention surrounding its roster and offseason additions, but this was another opportunity to show that the team is more than just hype surrounding transfers. They looked like a legitimate team from start to finish. MaxPreps currently has Carol City ranked No. 3 in Florida.

Now the question becomes how high this team can climb.

Buchholz Survives Vanguard in Overtime

Buchholz 34, Vanguard 28

This was exactly the type of game we expected from two talented North Central Florida programs.

Buchholz jumped out early, Vanguard battled back and the game eventually went to overtime before the Bobcats pulled away 34-28. The biggest moment came when Buchholz stopped Vanguard on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line in overtime to secure the win. It was a different ending from last year's meeting, when Vanguard stopped Buchholz on a two-point try to win 15-13.

Both teams showed enough to make it clear they're going to be factors as the season moves along.

Columbia Pulls Off One of the Night's Biggest Upsets

Columbia 20, Bolles 19

Wow.

Columbia went into Jacksonville and knocked off Bolles 20-19 in one of the biggest results of the night. The Tigers were coming off a 31-0 loss to Bolles last season, making this turnaround even more impressive. News4JAX called it a battle between two Super 10 programs, with Columbia showing just how much progress the program has made.

Lake City has talent, and Columbia just gave the rest of the state another reason to pay attention.

CCC and Palmetto Deliver a West Side Thriller

Clearwater Central Catholic 28, Palmetto 24

This one lived up to the billing.

Two programs we had ranked inside the Top 10 of our Tampa-SWFL rankings met in a game that featured plenty of big plays before CCC ultimately held on 28-24. Palmetto came up just short, but this is still a team with plenty of talent and a chance to make noise throughout the season.

CCC gets the win, but both programs showed why they remain among the teams to watch on the West Side.

Lake Wales and DeLand Go Down to the Wire

DeLand 35, Lake Wales 34

This was one of the wildest games of the night.

Lake Wales and DeLand traded blows throughout the night before the Bulldogs escaped with a 35-34 victory. Lake Wales had a chance to win it with a two-point attempt late, but couldn't convert.

The Highlanders were right there until the final play, while DeLand showed the toughness needed to survive a game that could easily have gone the other way.

Carrollwood Day Makes a Statement

Carrollwood Day 41, Eau Gallie 7

This might have been the most eye-opening result of the week.

Eau Gallie entered the game with major expectations after a strong 2025 season, while Carrollwood Day was looking to make a statement after a disappointing Kickoff Classic. Instead of a close battle, the Patriots dominated 41-7. Eau Gallie's loss was its biggest since 2019, according to the Week 1 roundup.

For Carrollwood Day, this was exactly the type of response the program needed.

Venice Wins a Thriller in Georgia

Venice 42, Rabun Gap 40 — OT

Venice isn't afraid of anybody.

The Indians packed the bags, traveled to Georgia and walked away with one of the best wins of the night, beating Rabun Gap 42-40 in overtime. The game was tied 34-34 after regulation, and Venice ultimately made the final defensive stop to secure the win.

This was a national-level matchup between two highly regarded programs, and Venice showed once again that it's willing to test itself anywhere.

Armwood Sets the Tone

Armwood 17, Lennard 7

This one had sleeper written all over it heading into kickoff, and it turned into a strong defensive battle.

Armwood eventually pulled away for a 17-7 win over Lennard, giving the Hawks the type of Week 1 victory that can set the tone for the rest of the season. Lennard had plenty of expectations entering the game, but Armwood's defense did enough to keep the offense from getting into a rhythm.

A good early statement from Armwood.

Hawthorne Stuns Bishop Moore

Hawthorne 28, Bishop Moore 25

One of the best finishes of the night came in Orlando.

Bishop Moore entered the season with a loaded roster and plenty of expectations, but Hawthorne walked away with a 28-25 victory. The Hornets showed the young talent coming through the program is ready to compete right now, not later.

That's a major result for Hawthorne to build on.

What a night of Week 1 football.
