Sights and Sounds: Capital Hosts Four Team Scrimmage

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>SANTA FE –</strong> With the start of the 2026 New Mexico high school football season just a week away, Capital hosted a four-team scrimmage Thursday afternoon at Jaguars Stadium. The invited guests were Deming, Pojoaque Valley and Valley.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The first segment of the scrimmage featured all four offenses running 10 plays against an opposing defense on one half of the field. The second segment had each offense running 15 plays against an opposing defense starting from the 30-yard line. The final segment featured red zone work.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Coming off a frustrating 1-10 season, Deming has a fresh look this season with recently hired head coach James Fetrow and a new quarterback in sophomore <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1826051' first='Richard' last='Holguin']</strong>. Throughout the scrimmage, Holguin showed promise as a dual threat signal caller. He has a strong arm but can also wreak havoc on defenses with his legs, as he did on several occasions.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“Richard is very athletic and he's quick,” Fetrow told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “We're working with him on reading the defense. Rather than just hiking the ball, we want him to assess the defense and feel where the pressure is coming.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Holguin is protected by a colossal offense line highlighted by the behemoth duo of 6-foot-8, 290 pound senior <strong>Moses Barajas</strong> and 6-foot-5, 275-pound junior <strong>Ethan Quintero</strong>.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“We ran a few plays we wanted to look at,” Fetrow said. “We had some good matchups. Playing different teams with different skills and different looks was good. It was promising. It was a stepping stone. We made some mistakes, of course, but we'll talk about those. Overall, it went well.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Deming opens the 206 season by hosting Organ Mountain on Aug. 21.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Valley has decided on a new starting QB: sophomore <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2256683' first='Jeremiah' last='Garcia']</strong>. He showed off his passing skills during Thursday's scrimmage. Garcia is very accurate on deep throws and completed a couple for long touchdowns.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“I felt our boys came out aggressive and played assignment football for the most part,” Valley head coach Billy Cobos told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “Great effort, all around.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Pojoaque Valley has an experienced dual threat quarterback in <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1248677' first='Joshua' last='Gonzales']</strong>. The Elks showcased impressive speed at the offensive skill positions and great size in the trenches.
