Rouse, Holmes help slug Strom Thurmond past North Augusta

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>JOHNSTON |</strong> Strom Thurmond proved last year it had the chin to be the champ.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Rebels took everyone's best shot and still rose to the occasion, delivering counter-punch after counter-punch en route to the Class 2A state championship.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>But last year was last year, and the biggest blows at the biggest times were delivered by a massive senior class. So it was only fair to wonder coming into 2026 how some of the less seasoned Rebels would answer the bell under the bright lights.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>In Week 1, they followed their leaders. Strom Thurmond struck first, responded late and then landed the knockout punch for a huge 21-7 win over local rival and Class 4A No. 8 North Augusta, with the defending champs extending their home win streak by imposing their will in a game that was anything but a casual encounter to open the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1818416' first='Zy' last='Rouse'] (pictured) is one of those key returners from last year's title team, and the do-it-all dynamo did even more in his first game as a junior. It didn't matter where he lined up - quarterback, tailback, slot receiver, safety - he made plays when they were absolutely necessary. Or, as head coach Andrew Webb put it, everyone else got to see the Rouse that the Rebels know and love.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Rouse intercepted a [player_tooltip player_id='1819537' first='Collin' last='Tillman'] pass late in the first quarter and returned it 74 yards all the way to the North Augusta 1-yard line. He was such a huge factor for the Rebels last year in short-yardage situations, so it only made sense to let him finish off the drive from a yard out. And he continued to do that in the second half, churning ahead for first downs to extend drives and eat clock, finishing with 64 yards on 17 tough carries. He added another short touchdown run for a 13-0 lead, and then he capped the scoring with a two-point conversion that made it 21-7 with only 6:51 to play.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>"It's great. It's great," Rouse said following the win. "They thought they were going to come back and beat us, but we stuck to our standard and came out here and played."</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>His two-pointer followed the biggest momentum swing of the night. Strom Thurmond never trailed in the game, but the comfort of a 13-0 lead with 10:07 to go was at least partially replaced by some uneasiness once Tillman led the North Augusta offense quickly down the field, peppering the ball to [player_tooltip player_id='1822103' first='Jeremiah' last='Brown'] before finding a wide-open [player_tooltip player_id='1839952' first='Zay' last='Harris'] for a 34-yard score that trimmed the deficit to 13-7 with 7:11 still to play.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That wasn't the swing, though. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1818415' first='Preston' last='Holmes'] still had something to say, and the Rebels' leading kick returner last year as a sophomore - despite so many college-bound skill-position players available for the job - housed the ensuing kickoff from 96 yards out to make it a two-score game once again.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>"Any time he touches it, he's electric," Webb said. "To make a play, to respond to the momentum swing with a kickoff return in this setting, in this atmosphere, unbelievable."</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That left North Augusta with too little time, and too much of a deficit to overcome, in the Jackets' first season-opening loss since 2022. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Rouse finished the game as Strom Thurmond's leading rusher, with [player_tooltip player_id='1615095' first='Kaden' last='Wigfall'] not far behind. Wigfall served mostly as a change-of-pace back last year, yet looked more than ready to be a feature back in the opener. He finished with 57 yards, and practically all of those seemed like they were after contact against North Augusta's ferocious defensive front.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The battle in the trenches received top billing heading into this one, and rightfully so. Strom Thurmond's offensive line was instrumental in last year's title run, yet only [player_tooltip player_id='2129235' first='Hezekiah' last='East'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1820537' first='John' last='Laster'] returned, plus [player_tooltip player_id='1820532' first='Bralen' last='Searles'] as an H-back. Still, that would be three new starters in a season opener, and [player_tooltip player_id='1536398' first='Simeon' last='Jones'] [player_tooltip player_id='1811094' first='Josh' last='Simpkins'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1839899' first='Dez' last='Davis'] aren't exactly a friendly welcoming party, especially once [player_tooltip player_id='1811107' first='Javon' last='Ryans'] joins them on the blitz from his middle linebacker position.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It made sense that the Jackets would have the upper hand in that matchup, and they created all kinds of problems throughout the game. They were suffocating in the first half, holding the Rebels to that lone touchdown that was set up by Rouse's long interception return.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Then Strom Thurmond's offensive line found its footing in the second half and started to lean on the Jackets. Sophomore tackle <strong>Bennie Mobley</strong> teamed with East to hold down the left side of the line, and to the right of Laster [player_tooltip player_id='1820535' first='Tyler' last='Culpepper'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1824926' first='Trystan' last='Brannon'] weathered the storm to help pave the way for Wigfall, Rouse and Holmes to find the space they needed to keep the offense on the field.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>North Augusta's defense rudely reacquainted itself with Strom Thurmond quarterback and former teammate [player_tooltip player_id='1827442' first='AJ' last='Hillary'] by harassing him into a 1-for-11 night for five yards. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Tillman didn't get off to a much better start against the Rebels, who limited him to 47 yards and Rouse's pick in the first half. He responded in the second half, however, to finish with 208 yards and a score despite taking shots from nearly every angle against a Strom Thurmond defense that had no interest in sitting back and playing prevent.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1827171' first='Jayden' last='Hatcher'] was Tillman's most frequent target, hauling in four catches for 25 yards. It was tough sledding in the run game, and he finished with 37 yards on 13 carries in what became a very pass-happy offense in the second half.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Freshman <strong>LJ Springs</strong> finished the game as North Augusta's leading receiver, with three catches for 57 yards on the what turned out to be the Jackets' final drive. That one ended with a fourth down pass break-up in the end zone by [player_tooltip player_id='654821' first='Mekhi' last='Quiller'] to cap a night full of them in the senior's Strom Thurmond debut.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Rebels knew coming into the season they were going to have plenty of talent in the secondary, with Quiller joining a unit led by preseason All-State pick [player_tooltip player_id='1422601' first='Wytrayvious' last='Dugar'] at safety and <strong>BJ Cresswell</strong> taking on a bigger role after impressing as a reserve last year. Making that talent even more dangerous is a formidable pass rush, and the Rebels got that with <strong>Bryson Mims</strong> and <strong>Kevin Bibbs</strong> supplying some early heat, and with [player_tooltip player_id='1671490' first='Jaivaughn' last='Bellamy'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1821008' first='Grant' last='Gentry'] making sure the relentless would indeed not relent in the second half.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Harris and [player_tooltip player_id='1827479' first='Chase' last='McNair'] both showed loads of big-play potential in the North Augusta passing game, and [player_tooltip player_id='1819541' first='Ky'Dre' last='Wright'] had a couple of highlights of his own before a personal foul penalty on a kickoff return ended his night prematurely.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>There were some missed opportunities in there for the Jackets, who twice chose to play for the points on fourth down inside the 10 but came away empty-handed when All-State kicker <strong>Jacob DeGennaro</strong> missed both attempts wide.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The win is a big momentum-builder for Strom Thurmond, 2A's preseason No. 1 team that faces another huge test in Week 2 at Class A No. 3 Abbeville. Once he got a hold of it in the second, however, it was clear why the coaching staff was so excited about giving him an elevated role. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph {"placeholder":"Add evaluation here...","className":"text-gray-700"} --> <p class="text-gray-700">He ran for 54 yards on only four carries, and his 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter was a huge answer after North Augusta got within a score. And it was how he did it - he slithered through North Augusta's defense, in some cases juking the same defenders twice on one play after bringing them back into it after avoiding trouble elsewhere.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block -->
