I watched him compete in person last season when Prairie took down Iowa City West. He stood out as a defensive back and also broke off a long return. Stumpff is an excellent athlete that also shines on the baseball diamond. That could be his sport of the future or perhaps he plays two of them in college. As it stands, he's the top-ranked defensive back and No. 17 player overall in the latest Redzone rankings. His sophomore highlight video from last season provides evidence of the explosive athleticism and potential to reach a high ceiling. It's a projectable 6-foot-3 frame capable of filling out and adding strength. As a 10th-grader on a Class 5A playoff team, Stumpff collected 26 solo tackles, an interception, five passes defended and a touchdown. A breakout season is loading.

Mahoney established himself as a prospect of note with his performance during Xavier's unbeaten run to a state championship last fall. Thirty of his 44 tackles were of the solo variety. He intercepted three balls, defended four passes, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and blocked a point-after-touchdown attempt. Mahoney also stood out on special teams with an exciting blend of athleticism, explosiveness and physicality. He really looked locked in on his assignment and played fast when I watched him in person during the state semifinals. His video impresses. Foot surgery will sideline Mahoney at the beginning of the 2026 season, but the junior is working hard through therapy in hopes of helping the Saints win another crown.

Dougherty took a big step forward in his development in 2025, finding ways to chip in to Xavier's unbeaten march to a state championship in 2025. Being a four-sport athlete that divides him time between them, another offseason of growth on the gridiron along with openings created by graduation losses give Dougherty a path to break out this fall. The junior is packed with potential, as we can witness when watching his 10th-grade highlight video Dougherty shows smooth footwork and quick change of direction as a safety which would help make him a fit in coverage at linebacker, too, should his projectable frame lead him up the second level. He also benefits from long strides and arms on locking up pass catchers. Dougherty's fundamentally sound tackling also gives him versatility to make it at defensive back, linebacker or hybrid.

Lampe stood out to me early on when watching Newton compete at Clear Creek Amana last season. The sophomore safety was making defensive calls and playing faster than many of the other guys on the field. While he brought physicality, his projectable frame can easily add more strength during the next few years. I saw that all again when he stood out on the big stage at the UNI-Dome, where the Cardinals lost a heartbreaker in the state semifinals to eventual-champion Xavier. Against the salty Saints, Lampe recorded 7.0 tackles (4 solo, 2.0 TFL) and a sack. The performance completed a sophomore season that saw him record 36.5 stops (31 solo, 5.0 TFL), 3.0 sacks and a forced fumble. Expect a sizable step forward this fall.

Smith proved he belonged on the varsity level as a sophomore in 2025. He collected 25.0 tackles. Thirteen of the stops were solo, and he added an interception, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Smith caught one pass for nine yards. His 10th-grade highlight video opens your eyes as a well-rounded athlete with big upside appears. Smith plays fast and with a purpose, getting downhill in a hurry and breaking down the ball carrier. Fluid hip movement, long arms and smooth changing of directions allows him to stick with receivers in coverage. They create small windows for opposing quarterbacks to throw through. It's a projectable frame with room to fill out. Iowa State, Illinois, Northern Iowa and others have invited him to games this season.
