AVC Football Camp: Offensive Line Notebook, Volume III

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>For the third year running, I was invited back by Fairleigh Dickinson University&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/CoachAVC_FDU">Head Coach Anthony Van Curen</a>, as he - yet again - pulled off our region's largest one-day football camp. This year's rendition welcomed just over 450 participants who all eyed up the opportunity to get eyeballed in front of current college coaches.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I could not determine which was deeper: the roster was loaded with talent or the roster of coaches in attendance. In my three years covering this event, this is perhaps the widest range of U.S. states represented, including: Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Georgia, Florida, Delaware, and Connecticut. However, more than I can recall in the last, an International crop of talent was extremely well represented, with prospects hailing from Austria, Bavaria, Danmark, Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Catalunya, Kenya, Podlaskie, Rhineland-Palatinate, Steiermark, Thuringia, Uppland, and Vienna. As far as coaches, there were more than I could count.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Below you will find my evaluation notes for the position group mentioned in the title of this article. Only catching one mere rep of his, with impressive size, Maher initially won his matchup at the line of scrimmage. However, as the play longed on, Maher's pad level rose. When taking pass sets at tackle, Nieves showed a quick kick step to go along with violent hands that went up-and-in. In fact, Nieves' hands were so violent that you actually heard them. A product of discipline, I noted that he was the only offensive lineman to take a three point stance despite participating in pass set simulations. In this situation, Nieves just exactly how well he can bend, power down, and do so quickly. Last observation on Nieves: he appears to be a worker. A rising senior, Hood showed some positives at this one. An immediate area to address, however, would be his tendency to lean forward in pass protection. Auguste bent well, but what was most impressive to me was how patient he was. He was able to stay in front of a number of his defensive opponents and competed well. Where Dede got lost was when his base fluctuated. Although he did not generate the most power, Besante profiles as a prospect that will win more with his leverage - mostly due to his ability to bend and work under his opponents.
