The Savages used that momentum and were absolutely dominant throughout the regular season. It started with three straight wins in non-district play, with the closest win coming in a 19-14 win over Tishomingo. From there, the Savages were rarely tested in district play. The only game that was decided by single digits was a week six win over Minco that they won 28-20. Wynnewood closed out the regular season in style with back to back wins by a combined score of 108-0 to complete the perfect 10-0 regular season. They ran away with the district championship and there was no doubt that they were going to be one of the contenders in the Class A-1 playoffs. Behind one of the top rushing attacks in the state, regardless of class, the Savages took that momentum into the playoffs. They beat Sayre by 20 points in the first round before losing a heartbreaker to Pawhuska at home. They lost to the Huskies 28-26 and the season came to an end at 11-1. But there's no doubt that it was the best season for the Savages in the last few years and they have plenty that they can carry over into the 2026 season. As they turn the page, this team is hungrier than ever to go on a run and they have the firepower to do so.

2026 OUTLOOK

The Savages come into the 2026 season as a borderline top five team in Class A-1 and they expect to be in the mix when November and ultimately December rolls around. They come into this season as one of the more experienced teams in Class A-1. Seven starters return on the offensive side of the ball and seven starters are also back on defense. But Wynnewood has some very impressive depth. They rotate guys at multiple positions so while they don't bring back all 11 starters, they bring back plenty of guys that also have playing experience, in addition to their returning starters. Offensively, it's going to be about their running game. They will have one of the better running backs in Class A-1 and an offensive line that can get the job done up front. This was a unit that flirted with averaging 40 points per game last season and we think they could get over that mark this fall. Defensively, the Savages are also set up to have a lot of success with plenty of experience returning in 2026. They are going to play a very physical brand of defense and should improve on their scoring average from last season, which is bad news for the rest of Class A-1 as they only gave up 11 points per game in 2025 and they could be better this fall. The Savages find themselves in a new district and on paper, it looks like it will be more competitive, especially the race for the district championship. But Wynnewood is certainly in the mix for that conversation and they could be in the conversation for much more in a wide open Class A-1 this fall.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Briar Davenport - Athlete (2025 All State Honorable Mention)
Elijah Andrews - Wide Receiver/Linebacker

PLAYERS TO WATCH

2027 running back [player_tooltip player_id='2252309' first='Aydrian' last='Knighten'] is ready to pick up where he left off last season. When we last saw Knighten on the field, he was enjoying a breakout junior season, finishing with over 1,200 yards and 24 touchdowns. Now, as he prepares for his senior season, the expectation is that Knighten's workload is going to expand and the numbers that he could put up could be monstrous. His older brother Caden was a dominant player for the Savages a few years ago and ended up at the next level. The bloodline is certainly there for Knighten to have a special senior season. We think he's flying under the radar but will be one of the better small school running backs in the state.

2027 safety [player_tooltip player_id='2252314' first='Braylon' last='Pierce'] is the first of two safeties that return for the Savages that they will lean on this season. Last year, Pierce was a breakout player for the Savages, finishing the season with over 50 tackles and three interceptions. Wynnewood is very excited about the potential of their secondary because of the two returning starters they have at the safety position. Look for Pierce to be one of several guys this fall that take a major step forward. You saw flashes of him being a very impactful player last year. Now, the stage is set for him to be an even better prospect and give the Savages another hard-hitting safety in the secondary.

When you look at the skill players that Wynnewood brings back, it's hard to imagine a scenario where the Savages aren't one of the higher scoring units in Class A-1. But all of that starts on the line of scrimmage. 2027 offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='2252317' first='Jaien' last='Fields'] returns after being one of the better two-way lineman prospects for the Savages last season. Offensively, Fields helped pave the way for a very explosive running game. He'll look to do the same again this season. Then he turned around and was a force on the defensive line. He finished the year with over 40 tackles. He's a 2027 prospect that could end up blowing up with another strong year this fall.

2027 safety [player_tooltip player_id='1690937' first='Jett' last='Anderson'] is the other safety to keep an eye on this season, in addition to Pierce in this Wynnewood secondary. Anderson was an absolute monster for the Savages last season. He finished with nearly 90 tackles on the year and five interceptions. He was truly one of Wynnewood's best defensive players and the expectation is that he can be even better for them this season. Anderson will also spend some time on the offensive side of the ball but there is no doubt that he will have his greatest impact on the defensive side of the ball. As we get closer to the start of the season, we believe that Anderson will be one of the better safeties in Class A-1.

2028 offensive and defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='2252304' first='Peyton' last='Henderson'] is a guy that the Wynnewood coaches are very high on moving forward. He'll be able to add depth to the offensive line but there is no doubt that he is at his best on the defensive line. Last season, Henderson exploded as a sophomore, finishing the year with over 80 tackles on the season. Talking with Wynnewood's coaches earlier this summer, they mentioned that Henderson is one of the better linemen they've been around. So the ceiling for him moving forward is incredibly high on both sides of the ball. What's scary is he was as impactful as just a sophomore. He has two more years of high school ball ahead of him.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='1229527' first='Colt' last=''] Nabors - 2029 Running Back/Defensive Back
Hunter Dotson - 2028 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Jett Underwood - 2027 Linebacker
Luke Stevenson - 2028 Running Back/Linebacker
Tariq Williams - 2028 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Tre Williams - 2029 Running Back/Linebacker
Treyden Stewart - 2029 Tight End/Defensive Lineman

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 28th - Ringling
- Wynnewood opens the 2026 season with a home game against Ringling in week zero. The Blue Devils are back on the schedule after these two were district opponents from 2020-2023 but haven't played since Class A was split into two divisions in 2024. Ringling has had Wynnewood's number, winning five straight in the series.
Sept. 3rd - AT McAlester JV
- In week one, the Savages go on the road for the first time in 2026 with a trip to McAlester to take on their JV squad. Wynnewood will do this on a short week after playing a physical Ringling squad so it's not the easiest set up for the Savages. But it's a game that they should take care of business before the non-district finale.
Sept. 11th - AT Wewoka
- The non-district slate comes to an end in week two with another road game, this time against Wewoka. The Tigers are back on the schedule for the Savages after not playing for the last six seasons. They were district opponents in 2018 and 2019 but haven't played since. They split that series with each game being high scoring and decided by ten points or less.
Sept. 25th - AT Mangum
- The district opener is arguably the toughest game on the schedule for Wynnewood as they'll travel to face Mangum in week four. They have never played the Tigers but it will be one of the marquee games in Class A-1 this season. Mangum comes up from A-2 but they bring basically everyone back from a team that went 10-0 in the regular season a year ago.
Oct. 2nd - Luther
- After going the entire month of September without playing in front of the home crowd, Wynnewood will square off with Luther at home in week five to kick off October. Similar to the Mangum match-up, this will be the first time these two teams square off. Luther is dropping down to Class A-1 after being in Class 2A-2.
Oct. 9th - AT Frederick
- After playing two opponents to open district play that they've never faced, Wynnewood finally sees a familiar opponent in week six. They travel to face Frederick and these two have been district opponents since the Class A split began in 2024. And this has been a district series where the Savages have taken care of business, winning each meeting by double digits.
Oct. 15th - Minco
- On a Fall Break Thursday night in week seven, Wynnewood hosts Minco in another massive district clash. These two have been district foes since the Class A split and the Savages are 2-0 since they started playing in 2024. But Minco gave Wynnewood their toughest test in district play last year. And they have a new head coach that just won a state championship.
Oct. 23rd - Stratford
- Out of all the teams on the schedule, Stratford is the one that Wynnewood has seen the most through the years. These two teams have been district opponents off and on for the last several decades. They've played every year since 2021 and Wynnewood has taken care of business in this series. They are 4-1 against Stratford, including last year's 56-0 win.
Oct. 30th - AT Comanche
- The final road game takes place in week nine when Wynnewood squares off with Comanche. The Indians will be a new district opponent on the Savage schedule but not a new opponent in general. These two teams have met in non-district play in each of the last two seasons. In 2024, Wynnewood won 27-8 and then last year there was a 25-point Savage win.
Nov. 6th - Walters
- The regular season wraps up in week ten with a home game against Walters. These two have been district opponents since 2024 but it has been a completely back and forth series. In that first meeting in 2024, Walters rolled to a 33-8 victory. Last season, the Savages repaid the favor with a 52-0 victory. Now, we get to see the grudge match between these two.

NOTABLE

It's been a decade since Wynnewood made a run to the state championship game in 2016, where they ran into Zaven Collins and the Hominy Bucks. But when you look at the history of Wynnewood football, there is no doubt that this has been one of the more consistent winning programs in small school football. But it's been a decade since their last run to the state championship. They don't usually go that long without making a deep run in the playoffs. Since that state title game appearance in 2016, last year's quarterfinal appearance was their first trip to the quarterfinal round. The Savages have a team that is not only capable of making it back there this year, but they could end up going further. There will be a new state champion in Class A-1 this season and Wynnewood is hopeful that it will be them. The Savages have plenty of history of making deep runs in the playoffs but they haven't lifted the gold ball in nearly 35 years. They look to end that championship drought this year.

LAST FIVE SEASONS

2025 - 11-1 - Lost In Class A-1 Quarterfinals
2024 - 8-3 - Lost In Class A-1 1st Round
2023 - 4-6 - Missed Playoffs
2022 - 9-3 - Lost In Class A 2nd Round
2021 - 4-6 - Missed Playoffs

CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

5 State Championships

1992 - Beat Watonga 27-22
1991 - Beat Hobart 27-0
1988 - Beat Nowata 35-7
1965 - Beat Stigler 8-0
1949 - Beat Checotah 7-0
