The Vian Wolverines had one goal in mind as they opened the 2025 football season. Get back to Edmond and raise the gold ball. The heartbreak of finishing as the 2A-2 runner up in 2024 fueled Vian throughout the offseason and they came into 2025 hungry to make it back. They tripped up early on in the season in a one-point loss against Kiefer. But they wouldn't lose again in the regular season. That included a 21-point win over Pocola and then dominating their way through district play. In fact, they won every district game by at least 30 points, leaving no doubt that they were the best team in the district. The regular season ended with a showdown on the road against undefeated Valliant for the district title. The Wolverines left no doubt, beating the Bulldogs 45-13 in a game that they dominated from start to finish. They opened up the playoffs with back to back blowout wins over Keys and Dibble. That set up a semifinal showdown with Davis, in a rematch of the 2024 state championship game. This was a match-up that the Wolverines had circled for a long time. They responded and beat the Wolves 21-0 to punch their ticket to the state championship game for the second consecutive year. They ran into another undefeated team in Adair in the title game. It was a back and forth game that featured plenty of big plays and star power. But for the second straight year, turnovers would doom the Wolverines and ultimately, they would have to settle for silver again, falling 34-29. But as we start looking ahead to the 2026 football season, we will be seeing a lot of new things around Vian football.

2026 OUTLOOK

Vian finds themselves playing for a new head coach, in a new class, with a lot of new faces on both sides of the ball. That is a whole lot of new for the Wolverines as they prepare for the 2026 season. First off, the Wolverines promoted defensive coordinator Lance Winans to be their next head football coach. While it's a new position for Winans, it also provides some stability to the staff and to the players as Winans has been around Vian football for the last 15 years. Before Vian knew that they would have a new head coach in 2026, they did know that they would be playing in a new class. After making it to back to back state championship games in Class 2A-2, the Wolverines actually drop down to Class A-1 for the next two seasons due to enrollment. And Vian is going to have a lot of new faces on the field. They only return four starters on offense and will have a new quarterback, running backs and multiple new names on the offensive line. After watching Vian in the spring, we're not concerned about their offense going into 2026. Just because they are new names doesn't mean they aren't talented. And there is plenty of talent on that Vian offense. Defensively, they only return three starters on that side of the ball. The identity of that unit will be a work in progress throughout the season but they do bring back their leading tackler from the last two seasons. That will certainly help this unit come along quicker. Vian is coming off two straight trips to the state title game so the expectations and the bar for this season are high. They play in a competitive district but we're going to know a lot about Vian after the month of September. The most difficult part of their schedule is in the first month. If they can navigate their way through that, they will be in a position to contend for the district title and ultimately the state championship in 2026.

The Wolverines are going to be pretty inexperienced on both sides of the ball but 2027 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1573294' first='Adoff' last='Stahl'] returns and he's the unquestioned veteran on this year's team. Stahl has been starting for Vian over the last several seasons and not only does he come into this season with plenty of experience, he also comes into this season with a ton of production. Stahl has led the team in tackles in each of the last two seasons. Vian will certainly rely on Stahl more than ever before this season as they bring those young names along on that side of the ball. Stahl will also be able to help out the Wolverines on offense when he lines up at wide receiver.

It wouldn't be Vian football without a member of the Wright family roaming on the field. 2029 running back and defensive end [player_tooltip player_id='1829231' first='Amos' last='Wright'] is the next guy up from a family that has been so impactful to Vian football for a long time. Wright played mostly on defense during his freshman season in 2025. He'll still line up at defensive end this season but look for him to have a breakout season at the running back position. Vian has had some outstanding production at the running back position over the last several seasons. Amos has the potential to be the next guy but he still needs to prove it under the Friday night lights in the fall. He has all the tools to be their next star.

2029 quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1836182' first='Carter' last='Madsen'] appears to be the next guy at QB1 for the Wolverines as they look to replace a two-year starter at the position. Madsen looked really good when we watched Vian in the spring. He's not the biggest quarterback but don't let the height fool you. Madsen has a rocket arm and can really push the ball downfield. Vian has some experience returning at wide receiver and some emerging stars at the position as well. Because of that, we think that Madsen is going to be able to put up some solid numbers in his first season as QB1. Now, this is Vian football so they will always be a run-first team. But when they need to throw it, they are in good hands with Madsen.

When we had a chance to watch Vian in person this spring, 2027 wide receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='2243581' first='Demariaun' last='Antwine'] immediately stood out to us as a name to watch moving forward. Antwine moved to Vian from Warner and looks like he'll be an instant impact player for the Wolverines at the wide receiver position. First off, the athleticism is off the charts and between his height and his leaping ability, he's a match-up nightmare in one-on-one situations with opposing cornerbacks. Then he turns around and can provide that same athleticism on the defensive side of the ball. In our opinion, Antwine has all the tools to be a breakout star this season.

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 28th - Holdenville
- The 2026 football season begins with a home game against Holdenville. If this was the last two seasons, it would be a showdown between top ten teams in Class 2A-2. Now, Vian is A-1 while Holdenville looks to go after the 2A-2 crown. This will be the first meeting between these two Wolverine squads since 2017.
Sept. 11th - AT Kiefer
- After a week off, Vian hits the road in week two to face Kiefer in non-district play. This will be the third straight year that these two have met early in the season. Vian won the first meeting in 2024 with ease, beating the Trojans 45-14. Kiefer got some payback last year with a 30-29 win and they bring a lot of starters back from 2025.
Sept. 18th - AT Muldrow
- The Wolverines will wrap up non-district play with a week three road game against Muldrow. The Bulldogs are in a similar position as Vian as they are looking to reload after they lost a talented senior group. This will be the first meeting between these two teams since they met in non-district play in 2016 and 2017. Vian won both meetings.
Sept. 25th - Pocola
- The district slate opens up with arguably the biggest game on the district schedule. Vian hosts Pocola in week four and both teams are ranked in the top five of our Class A-1 rankings. Both teams expect to contend for the state title and the winner here could run away with the district crown. Vian has dominated this series in the last two decades but the gap is getting smaller.
Oct. 2nd - AT Panama
- After the showdown with Pocola, the Wolverines will go on the road to face Panama in week five. This is another series that Vian has been absolutely dominant in over the last several decades. Although, these two teams haven't played since 2021. Vian won 41-7 that season and they'll look to pick up where they left off in 2026.
Oct. 9th - Warner
- Vian returns home in week six to kick off the second half of the regular season against Warner. This is another new district opponent for the Wolverines but not a new opponent in general. These two have met twice in the last several seasons. They met in 2022 and then again in 2023. Neither match-up was competitive with Vian winning both by 30 points or more.
Oct. 15th - AT Okemah
- On a Fall Break Thursday night in week seven, the Wolverines will go on the road to face Okemah. After not playing the last two seasons, these two teams find themselves in the same district once again. They've played in district play off and on for the last decade. And it's another series that Vian has rolled in, going 4-0 in the last decade.
Oct. 23rd - Coalgate
- In week eight, the Wolverines will host Coalgate in district play. For the most part, the Wolverines have some recent history with every other opponent on their schedule. Not with Coalgate. These two teams haven't met on the gridiron in over three decades. Vian will be looking for a win to continue momentum towards the playoffs.
Oct. 30th - AT Haskell
- In week nine, Vian will go on the road for the final time in the regular season when they face Haskell. The Haymakers made a playoff appearance last season but Vian will come into this game as the favorites. They haven't played each other in a decade. Not since they were district opponents in 2016 and 2017. Vian went 2-0 in that stretch.
Nov. 6th - Hulbert
- The regular season will come to an end with a week ten game against Hulbert at home. This is another series that has not been played in a long time. The last time Vian played Hulbert was in district play in 2004 and 2005. The Wolverines prevailed both times, with the winning margin being 40+ points. Vian will look to roll again to wrap up the regular season.

NOTABLE

Head coach Lance Winans is stepping into a very interesting position as the next head coach of the Wolverines. As we mentioned earlier in the preview, Winans has been on staff for over a decade and is now the guy in charge of the program. And when you look at Vian's last two head coaches, the bar is incredibly high. Brandon Tyler was on the Vian staff and then was promoted to head coach in 2004. He was Vian's head coach from 2004-2015 and went 128-25 during his tenure. When he stepped down, the Wolverines promoted Gary Willis to be their next head coach. He proceeded to go 104-25 during his tenure. Not to mention all of the trips to the state championship game. So their last two coaches each won at least 100 games during their time. Again, it's a high bar at a program like Vian. But those are the expectations for a program that has built up this reputation of being a small school power. Year after year, the Wolverines are always in the mix. It doesn't matter what class they are in, you pencil Vian in as a playoff team and despite having a new head coach and a lot of new faces on the field, that bar and those expectations are still unbelievably high.
