They had a new head coach as Hall Of Famer Dale Condict took over as their next head coach. After losing a special senior class, the Roughers were going to look a lot different on the field and the sideline in 2025. It was a tough start to the season against a tough non-district schedule. They started 0-3 but would bounce back immediately when district play began. The Roughers rattled off four straight wins and found themselves in the district title hunt in the final few weeks. But a 21-point loss to Sand Springs, followed by another tough loss to Sapulpa ended hopes of a district title. The Roughers closed out the regular season with a win to finish 5-5 with all five wins coming in district play. They dismantled Northwest Classen in the first round and had to go on the road to face Putnam City in the quarterfinals. That's where the season ultimately came to an end as they lost 21-20 to the Pirates, who nearly made it to the state championship game. Muskogee finished 6-6 in 2025 and that was certainly a change after going 33-5 in the previous three seasons. But the Roughers showed steady improvement, played a lot of young players and now as they turn the page, things are looking a little brighter as they start to prepare for the 2026 football season.

2026 OUTLOOK

The Roughers come into the 2026 season looking to take a major step forward and get back into the state title picture in Class 6A-2. Four starters are back on the offensive side of the ball but they are not lacking talent on that side. And last season, offense was not the issue for a team that averaged nearly 40 points per game. They'll have a new quarterback but the Roughers are confident that they'll be able to light up the scoreboard once again. The strength of the offense will start on the offensive line with multiple guys returning and that should help pave the way for a lot of those new faces in the skill positions. Defensively, the Roughers also bring back around five full time starters from last year's team but just like with the offense, they bring back a few more players that got plenty of playing time. Now, those part time players will step into starting roles and the Roughers are confident that they'll be able to answer the call. Now, Muskogee will be facing a very competitive schedule once again. But more importantly, it's a unique one that won't see them play a district game until week six. The Roughers will play the top four teams in Class 6A-2 this season with the top two teams from the east side district and then the top two teams from the west side district. If this new group can grow up quickly, by the time district play starts in early October, they should be in a position to go on a run.

KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION

Hayden VonHolt - Defensive Lineman (2025 All State Honorable Mention)
Jamie Beasley - Wide Receiver (2025 All State Honorable Mention)
Kyron Cope - Defensive Lineman (2025 All State Honorable Mention)

PLAYERS TO WATCH

2027 defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1718190' first='Anthony' last='Harris'] joins the Roughers after moving to Muskogee this offseason from Wagoner. Harris played for Condict when he was a sophomore and then stayed with the Bulldogs last season, where he was incredibly productive. With Wagoner, as a junior, Harris finished the year with over 80 tackles and 12 sacks. The Roughers are going to put Harris right in the middle of their defense and they expect him to set the tone for them defensively. He certainly has that potential and he's an example of a guy that isn't a “returning starter” for the Roughers but he is not going to be lacking experience when he takes the field this fall.

2028 running back [player_tooltip player_id='1619198' first='Anthony' last='Hytche'] is an offensive standout that Muskogee's coaches are excited about coming into this season. Last year, Hytche was just a sophomore and saw limited playing time for the Roughers. But he has had a terrific offseason and all signs point to him being a breakout star for the Roughers in their offense this season. Whenever Hytche did touch the ball last season, he showed flashes of being a guy that could be a marquee back. He is going to get that opportunity this season and it will be interesting to see what he does with it. There are a handful of players that are in similar positions to Hytche going into this season.

The third Anthony on this breakdown, 2027 wide receiver and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='2141893' first='Anthony' last='Mcnac Jr'] is in a similar position to Hytche where he showed flashes of being a playmaker during his junior season. Now, he goes into his senior season looking to emerge as one of the top playmakers in 6A-2. Like Hytche, McNac had limited opportunities last season, finishing with a little over 200 yards and three receiving touchdowns. But as the Roughers head into the 2026 season, the expectation is that McNac will emerge as their top target in the passing game. McNac has the Muskogee coaches excited about his potential of being a big play threat for them on offense.

The Roughers played QB musical chairs this offseason with several guys coming in and out of the program. Ultimately, 2028 signal caller and newcomer [player_tooltip player_id='1836765' first='Brayden' last='McMullen'] will be the guy after coming over from Lincoln Christian. We got a chance to watch McMullen back in the spring during one of our 7v7 tournaments and he was incredibly impressive from an accuracy, arm talent and leadership perspective. McMullen has checked all of those boxes with the Roughers and has come in and fit right in with what Muskogee wants to do offensively this season. Don't be surprised if McMullen becomes a breakout player for the Roughers in 6A-2 this season.

We mentioned earlier in the preview how Muskogee was going to be led on offense by a very strong and talented offensive line. 2027 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id='1828415' first='Jomontae' last='Alexander'] (also known as JoJo) is the guy that will get the job done for them up front. He leads an experienced group back in 2026. He has really solid size and his technique as a blocker got better and better throughout his junior season. He's a big reason why the Roughers feel like they won't take a step back at all on offense, despite having plenty of new faces. Alexander is one of several 2027 prospects for Muskogee that might be flying under the radar heading into this season but they will be impact players for the Roughers.

2027 defensive back [player_tooltip player_id='1828920' first='Treshaun' last='Pouncil'] is one of the defensive prospects that Muskogee's coaches have high hopes for heading into this season. Pouncil is a tall cornerback that has the potential to have a breakout season this fall. You could see flashes of what he could do in the Rougher secondary last season. He finished the year with over 20 tackles and a pair of interceptions, one of which he took back for a touchdown. As Muskogee comes into this season, they are going to lean on Pouncil to help some of the new players in the secondary. The expectations are that Pouncil can emerge as one of the better cover corners in 6A-2 this season.

MORE NAMES TO KNOW

Allen Maxwell - 2030 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1839709' first='Brayshon' last='Hollis'] - 2029 Linebacker
[player_tooltip player_id='1828925' first='Courtenay' last='Nash'] - 2028 Offensive Lineman
[player_tooltip player_id='1839585' first='Jakarri' last='Ashley'] - 2028 Linebacker
Kamaurian Jones - 2029 Linebacker
Kashe Fullbright - 2029 Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
Kentrell Jones - 2030 Running Back/Defensive Back
Lynwood Wade - 2029 Tight End/Defensive End
Ra'Shaun Puckett - 2029 Linebacker
Timajae Williams - 2029 Defensive Lineman

2026 SCHEDULE

Aug. 28th - AT Springdale, AR.
- Muskogee will kick off the 2026 season in northwest Arkansas against Springdale in week zero. The Roughers are no strangers to facing off with Arkansas opponents during this decade. But Springdale will be a new opponent for the Roughers this season. They will look to come back to Oklahoma with a big season-opening win.
Sept. 4th - McAlester
- The home slate begins with a game against a top ten team in Class 5A as McAlester comes to town in week one. These two teams met in non-district action every year from 2014-2019 but haven't played since that last meeting. The Roughers went 4-2 against the Buffaloes during that stretch and the four wins came in the last four meetings.
Sept. 11th - AT Claremore
- The Roughers go back on the road in week two and face Claremore for the first time in a little over a decade. When Class 6A was split into two divisions, these two were actually district opponents in 6A-2 in 2014 and 2015. The Roughers won both of those meetings and Claremore went down to Class 5A and have been there ever since.
Sept. 18th - Choctaw
- The Roughers will certainly have this game circled as they return home to host Choctaw in week three. Muskogee ran into Choctaw in the 2024 state championship game as they looked for a second straight title and a perfect season. They came up short and the Yellowjackets walked away with gold. This is their first meeting since that title game.
Oct. 2nd - Piedmont
- After a week off, Muskogee will host Piedmont in week five and it will also be their final non-district game of the year. Just like Choctaw, Piedmont comes into this season as a top four team in the 6A-2 preseason rankings. It's the final tune up game before wins and losses count towards playoff seeding. It will also be the first meeting between these two.
Oct. 9th - Booker T Washington
- District play finally opens up in week six with a home game against Booker T Washington. The Hornets and Roughers have played every year since the 6A split began in 2014. Even the last two seasons when Booker T Washington was in Class 5A. The Roughers lost 21-14 last season and that snapped a three-game winning streak against the Hornets.
Oct. 15th - AT Ponca City
- The Roughers head west on a Fall Break Thursday night to face Ponca City in week seven. These two teams have met nearly every season in the last decade and the Roughers have owned the series. Ponca City only has one win during that stretch and it came in 2021. Muskogee won 55-29 last season.
Oct. 22nd - AT Stillwater
- The Roughers go back on the road for another Thursday night game in week eight. They travel to Stillwater to face the Pioneers in district play for the first time since 2023. These two have had two playoff meetings since then, both ending in Muskogee victories, including the 2023 state championship game. This game will have major playoff implications.
Oct. 30th - Bartlesville
- The Roughers host Bartlesville in week nine and they'll look to continue their dominant play in this district series. Muskogee has won five straight and 10 of the last 11 in this series. But Bartlesville is going to look different this year. They hired a familiar head coach that is known around the state for turning programs around immediately.
Nov. 6th - AT Sand Springs
- Muskogee wraps up the regular season in week ten with another road game, this time against Sand Springs. The Sandites are coming off a state championship a year ago. These two have met in district play every year since the 6A split in 2014. The Sandites beat the Roughers 49-28 last season and that snapped Muskogee's three-game winning streak.

NOTABLE

Head coach Dale Condict is heading into his second season as head coach of the Roughers and there was definitely a learning curve for the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall Of Famer. After a very successful two decades with Wagoner, Condict moved over to Muskogee and took over the Rougher football program when Travis Hill left to take the Broken Arrow job. The coaching carousel prior to the 2025 season will go down in history as the craziest offseason in state history. Condict's Rougher team went 6-6 and bowed out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals. Here's an absolutely crazy stat about last season. It shouldn't be surprising considering how successful Condict was at Wagoner and how many wins and championships there were during his two decades there. But last season's 6-6 campaign was just the second time since 2009 that a Dale Condict-coached team did not win at least ten games. In 2009, Wagoner went 8-4. Starting in 2010, there was only one season where the Bulldogs didn't win at least ten games and they went 9-3. This season, getting back to ten wins or more is going to be tough with how competitive the schedule is.
