Edna Karr graduated one of the most accomplished and talented senior classes in not just program history, but state history this year after its second straight state championship at the highest level of competition.

The Cougars will be largely new-look in 2026 in terms of names and faces, and several members of a promising sophomore class are expected to be thrown into the proverbial fire for big roles early in there varsity careers.

But the combination of a few returning experienced leaders, some older players who have been under-the-radar outside of the program but should be ready to shine now that more opportunities are available and the talented youngsters already earning the confidence of their coaches and teammates have the perennial power positioned to be among the best teams in The Boot once again.

Louisiana's high school football season is just over a month away, and Prep Redzone Louisiana will spotlight some of the top programs and prospects as in years past with its 3-2-1 format of three well-known returning stars or leaders, two notable candidates for breakout performance or big steps forward in some fashion and one underclassman to know sooner than later.

3 WELL-KNOWN RETURNERS

[player_tooltip player_id='1610129' first='Juelz' last='Batiste'] — 6-3, 225 EDGE — Edna Karr (2027)

The highest-ranked prospect in the Cougars' rising senior class, Batiste was in the "breakout candidate" category last year as an under-the-radar, but promising player behind the scenes and lived up to — if not exceeded — expectations as a junior. The Ole Miss commit is a long, athletic and tenacious edge rusher who has only continued to get bigger and stronger with another year of development. The biggest question is how he carries the mantle of being "the guy" most opponents know and game-plan for now that the 2026 crew around him has headed to college. But Edna Karr will have a talented front once again this fall, and any attention Batiste can command will only open the door for other capable playmakers to take advantage of their opportunities.

[player_tooltip player_id='1593649' first='Zyion' last='Wesley'] — 6-4, 285 OL — Edna Karr (2027)

Edna Karr is slated to send an offensive lineman to Starkville, Miss., for the second straight recruiting class after Wesley's commitment this summer to Mississippi State. The Bulldogs couldn't ask for a much better fit for their mascot moniker, as the Cougars' powerful mauler and hard-nosed and passionate leader may warrant the popular "dog/dawg" label as much as any prospect in the class. He has projected primarily as an interior lineman at the next level, but will enter his second season holding down a tackle spot in Algiers.

[player_tooltip player_id='955469' first='Nigel' last='Marshall'] — 5-11, 265 DL — Edna Karr (2027)

The "Animal" is back in the middle of the Edna Karr defensive line, providing an invaluable veteran anchor up front for what should be another productive, disruptive and tone-setting group overall in the trenches. The recent Lamar commit is stout, strong, skilled and disciplined. For all the headlines dominated by his senior teammates this past fall, he excelled in his role in that mix as he stuffed running lanes, won one-on-one matchups and seemed to have a knack for timely plays in big moments to help halt opponents' drives.

2 BREAKOUT CANDIDATE

[player_tooltip player_id='1801186' first='Eldric' last='Cambrice Jr.'] — 5-10, 160 DB — Edna Karr (2027)

The secondary features as much turnover as any position group in Algiers, but the Cougars do return some experience despite sending a handful of 2026 graduates to college programs. Cambrice is one of the key veteran leaders of this year's bunch after earning opportunities alongside the loaded senior group last fall. He is a quick, confident cornerback who makes well-timed plays on the ball in the air and is also a willing tackler who flies to the ball and wraps up in space. He and [player_tooltip player_id='1281163' first='Kaiden' last='Lucas'] (6-1, 185 DB) are among the most familiar names in the secondary, two 2027 prospects who have been ranked on Prep Redzone Louisiana lists for the class for more than a year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1248269' first='Ian' last='Gray'] — 6-0, 185 LB — Edna Karr (2027)

and [player_tooltip player_id='2228455' first='Anthony' last='White Jr.'] — 6-3, 230 EDGE/LB — Edna Karr (2027)

Lots of focus in terms of big shoes to fill on defense will center on succeeding a pair of LSU signees at defensive tackle and safety, but this offseason also marks another in which the Cougars see notable turnover from productive, playmaking leaders at linebacker. There once again appears to be no shortage of rising seniors with Division-I talent ready to take the torch and run with it, though. Gray was a major stock-riser in this summer's rankings update after a two-interception performance in the title game and a spring in which he looked poised to be a tackle machine this fall. White is a longer, leaner athlete expected to play a versatile role this fall and who has picked up a slew of college offers this offseason. And Ronell Kindell Jr. (5-9, 200) is another experienced name to know who already has some big plays in big games on his résumé.

1 UNDERCLASSMAN TO KNOW

[player_tooltip player_id='2243882' first='Edward' last='Dailey'] — 6-3,. 290 DL/EDGE — Edna Karr (2029)

and [player_tooltip player_id='2243881' first='Lance' last='Felix'] — 6-6, 255 OL — Edna Karr (2029)

Some lagniappe here as well with two of the budding stars in the trenches who will help headline the Cougars' loaded 2029 class for years to come. Dailey, nicknamed "Hulk," is a versatile and disruptive athlete on the defensive front who will be capable of playing inside or off the edge, while Felix is a long and athletic tackle who was already getting reps this spring to potentially hold down the blind side at left tackle. Edna Karr could easily have double-digit legitimate candidates for the spot, but we're trying to be selective in this series, hit the key points and not often overload this spot and list multiple underclassmen for many teams. But Dailey and Felix should both be among the top tier of contenders atop the entire state's 2029 class, and fans will know the names sooner than later.

Edna Karr graduated one of the most accomplished and talented senior classes in not just program history, but state history this year after its second straight state championship at the highest level of competition.
