Cathedral, Orange, St. Paul Excel in Passing Tournaments

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Several Southern California programs got an early start on the summer passing tournament circuit last weekend. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Cathedral won the Simi Valley Tournament which featured over 25 teams and went undefeated on the day.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Orange won the Battle for SGV Tournament at Arcadia and beat St. Paul in the finals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Here are some top performers from the three teams over the weekend per coaches and reports:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:heading --> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>CATHEDRAL</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Phantoms were led by new transfer quarterback <strong>Cooper Berry</strong>, who had a big day. Berry threw for 243 yards per game with 27 touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns for Maranatha last season. Berry is replacing a quarterback who threw for 279 yards per game with 36 touchdowns and 13 rushing touchdowns, so he may be due for another big season in Cathedral's system. Berry's top receivers on the day were senior <strong>Brian Prince</strong> and sophomore <strong>Tyrin Jefferson</strong>. Prince caught 26 passes for 413 yards with six touchdowns last season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Defensively, Cathedral was led by <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='2124686' first='Jeremiah' last='Jackson']</strong>, <strong>Jayden McCullough</strong> and <strong>Rashaun Covington Jr.</strong> The trip combined for over six interceptions on the day per coach <strong>Vince Jefferson</strong>. [player_tooltip player_id='1204832' first='Star' last='Thomas III'] has been turning heads this offseason with his arm and I was very impressed by him at the Elite 11 Finals. Thomas' top target was Mission Viejo transfer [player_tooltip player_id='1197940' first='Kollin' last='Woodbury Jr'] who is one of the better deep threats in Orange County. He had a nice one-handed touchdown catch and multiple TDs on the day. <strong>Dylan Stone</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='797123' first='Malahki' last='Allen']</strong> have also been heating up at receiver for the Panthers. PAUL</strong></h2> <!-- /wp:heading --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>St. Paul was the runner up at the Battle for SGV tournament in Arcadia and lost to Orange in the championship game. Running back and receiver <strong>Jace Levario</strong> led the Swordsmen with nine touchdowns and scored all of St. Paul's points in the championship game against Orange. Sophomore quarterback <strong>Josh Villalta</strong> had a strong showing and had zero turnovers on the whole day. A pair of young guys led St. Paul's defense: sophomore safety <strong>Visi Aseh</strong> and freshman linebacker <strong>Visa Hufanga</strong>.
