July is the final month for quarterbacks to put the finishing touches on the off-season grind.

The physical work is done — the deposits have been made. Now it's time to sharpen two critical areas: the cognitive demands of the game's toughest position and the vital chemistry needing to be developed with their receivers.

As a QB, game cognition, the ability to rapidly diagnose coverages, process pre- and post-snap information, anticipate routes, and make quick, accurate decisions — all in under three seconds — is what separates the good from the elite.

When it comes to attributes, arm strength and foot speed are amplifiers that help peak recruiting interest, but it's the guys who can use their gray matter to process at a scorching pace and translate that into surgical decision making in a compressed-time environment, who are the ones with a chance to be elite.

Additionally, July is the time to spend with all your receivers — tight ends, wings, wideouts, all-purpose backs, even the tackle-eligible guys as needed — so both sides can develop a feel for each other and seamlessly sync with the unique nuances each brings to the game.

In this report, we spotlight five rising-star quarterbacks who have been burning the candle at both ends getting ready and are paying particular attention to cognition and connection in this final month prior to pre-season.

So, without further adieu, let's check out what these guys have been doing to get ready:

[player_tooltip player_id='1166125' first='Colt' last='Curry'], 6'2, 205, QB, Maize, '27, it has been a busy off-season for this dual-threat gunslinger, getting started early in the year with a big performance at the Miami (FL) Rivals Combine, which featured invite-only QBs from all over the nation. He stepped up in a big way, with a 1st in broad jump, and 2nd in the 10-yard dash. The month of June in particular was a blur as he started the month by making the all-combine team at Lindenwood and also went to camps at West Florida, Pitt State and Missouri Western. This weekend he continued the camp roll with stops at Emporia State and Fort Hays. His training with Coach Rashad is paying off as he has been showcasing both his burst and explosiveness (4.6 40; 4.2 5-10-5; 10'3 BJ). He has also been fine-tuning his passing mechanics with QB coach Rocky Hinds. This playmaker can make all the throws as well as torch teams with his wheels. He is ready for a dominating senior season this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1579585' first='Jerick' last='Humphreys'], 6'1, 200, QB, Hesston, '27, he is a four-sport athlete coming off a breakthrough season last fall when he fired 110 completions in 159 attempts for a 69% completion percentage, 12 TD passes to only four picks and a sizzling passer rating of 115. He also ran for 229 yards and another 9 TDs on the ground. In one three-game span in mid-season he showed his potential completing 39 of 43 passes, 91%, 556 yards and five TD's. He is an athletic dual-threat QB with quick feet and the burst to extend plays outside the pocket. He throws an excellent long ball with good touch and delivers tight ball placement throwing on the move either way. His off-season has been busy playing hoops, baseball and helped the tennis team to a state title this spring. He has also been focusing on QB-specific training and throwing with his receivers on the weekends. This guy has just been getting warmed up and is ready for an encore season this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1537490' first='Aidan' last='Ihm'], 6'2, 195, QB, Blue Valley NW, '27, next up is a dual-threat athlete who I have had my eye on since early last year and he has developed into a high-ceiling gunslinger. Last fall he missed a couple of games for concussion protocol but still fired 103 completions in 173 attempts for a 60% completion percentage and 12 touchdown passes. On the ground he added another 317 yards to give him 1,600+ total yards and 13 TD's. His off-season has been busy as he wrapped up track by breaking the school record in the javelin and has been busy on the camp circuit, showcasing his game at Washburn, Augustana, Pitt State, Ft Hays, Missouri Western and Emporia State. He also played 7v7 with Top City in the spring, and has been training with Justin Hoover and Sharp Performance to get fine-tuned for a big fall. With a strong, versatile arm that can deliver darts at all three levels, this guy is going to come out firing this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1672095' first='Joey' last='Dintino'], 5'11, 175, QB/DB, Hays (transfer from Plainville), '27, I may be getting ahead of myself with this posting, but the rumor at the local watering hole is this dual-threat QB is transferring to Hays after an excellent junior year for Plainville. In 8 games last year he completed 54 of 105 passes for 985 yards, threw 9 TD passes, and also rushed for 153 yards and added two more touchdowns. On defense coming out of the secondary he made 20+ tackles, intercepted two passes and blocked two punts, with one returned for a TD. Once the season was over he went right into basketball, averaging 16+ points per game as a PG, and has been lifting weights, doing speed work and getting in a lot of throwing. He is athletic with the running ability to beat teams on the ground but can really slice and dice defenses through the air, firing strikes from the pocket or on the move. Wherever this baller ends up playing he is ready for a banner senior year.

Reed Clift, 6'2, 205, QB/LB, Iola, '28, and last but certainly not least is the only junior in this report and is a dual-threat playmaker who has been flying under the radar somewhat getting his varsity career launched last year with four sophomore starts. And, if those 4 games were any indication, the Mustang's are in good hands as he ran and passed for 1,300+ yards and 17 touchdowns - averaging 300+ all-purpose yards per start. On the other side of the ball he was a headhunter LB who had 55 tackles, a pair of tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. With ideal size and speed, he is elusive running the RPO or extending plays on the perimeter. Through the air he has a well-rounded arm that can go deep with the long touch pass or make quick, accurate throws on the move in the short game. He has been busy this summer and in June hit camps at Pitt State, University of Arkansas and was at KU later in the month. This guy gave fans a glimpse of his game last year and is getting ready to deliver the fireworks this fall.

In conclusion, get out and see these guys dominate this fall - you will not be disappointed. Also, DM me via X if you run across any players flying under the radar.

And, as usual…
