5 available 2027 safeties colleges should watch entering season

Dozens of Louisiana's top-ranked 2027 prospects have announced college commitments already, but the several legitimate Division-I prospects around the always-talented state remain available on the recruiting market entering senior year.   With August fast approaching, Prep Redzone Louisiana will look at a few of the most notable uncommitted prospects at each position that programs should take a closer look heading into the fall for potential steals in the final month of the cycle.   Here are a handful of safeties to keep an eye on.   [player_tooltip player_id='1593755' first='Karon' last='Eugene'] — 6-2, 170 DB — Westgate   The son of former Louisiana Tech and NFL safety Hiram Eugene is the highest-ranked uncommitted player in the PRZLA rankings at any position. Following a breakout sophomore season in 2024, he stacked an impressive offer list that includes LSU, Ohio State, USC, Michigan, Houston and Texas A&M. This offseason was more quiet, or at least close to vest, as he recovered from injury and transferred high schools. But he enters this fall as one of the biggest remaining prizes in Louisiana's recruiting class and with the potential to be a difference-making piece on one of the state's most talented teams.   [player_tooltip player_id='707508' first='Terin' last='Jones'] — 6-0, 180 DB — Hammond   Jones is a smart and instinctive athlete who quarterbacks his Tornadoes' offense and sees the field as well when playing on the other side of the ball in the secondary. The versatile standout reads, reacts and breaks on plays quickly to get to passes for deflections or flow to the ball, shed blockers and wrap up as a reliable tackler in space. He recently posted an offer from Millsaps and has been recruited by a handful of Division-I programs around the region.   [player_tooltip player_id='1281163' first='Kaiden' last='Lucas'] — 6-1, 185 DB — Edna Karr   The Cougars' deep and loaded 2026 class dominated the lineup this past fall during the program's repeat title run, but Lucas was among the notable juniors who earned opportunities for the senior-led team and should be well-positioned to take on and run with a bigger role now in his own final high school season. He sees the field, reads and anticipates well and is a willing and effective tackler. Lucas earned a string of early offers last May from Southern Miss, Auburn and Troy and should be able to spark a renewed wave of college interest this fall.   [player_tooltip player_id='1782943' first='Kyron' last='Turner'] — 6-4, 185 DB — Haughton   The long, rangy athlete on the back end of his Buccaneers' defense is another promising prospect in the class who has been recruited by Power-Four programs, including an offer in March from Cincinnati. Turner has checked athletic-testing boxes in impressive fashion with 40-yard dashes in the 4.5-second range and 34.4-inch and 10-foot-4-inch vertical and broad jumps and has put together the film to watch with the ground he covers and his effectiveness and production as a tackler.   [player_tooltip player_id='1782704' first='Kobe' last='Vital'] — 6-3, 170 DB/ATH — Abbeville   The Wildcats' versatile and multisport athlete's long frame, fluid athleticism and quickness make him one of the more intriguing prospects in the class with a chance to be a real steal if he could put everything together. He played a lot of corner this past season, but has shown the ability to play all over the field — on both sides of the ball — and more likely projects as a safety where his ability to cover ground in the middle of the field or crash down and get disruptive and physical with plays closer to or behind the line of scrimmage allow him to impact games in a wide range of ways.
