Greer tailback [player_tooltip player_id='1816751' first='Calvin' last='McCoy'] had one of the quietest productive seasons you could imagine last year, with more than 1,300 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, and very little attention. That's the way the quiet McCoy likes it, and at the PRZ Media Day session at Fountain Inn he said he's expecting his output - and his under-the-radar effectiveness - to continue.

"I'm pretty proud of it," McCoy said of carrying on the tradition of high-level backs at the school. "Playing running back is kind of like a legacy at Greer. And I think what I was able to do last year is going to make me even better."

A lot of that comes thanks to the guys in front of him. [player_tooltip player_id='1809928' first='Nathan' last='Huff'] returns to lead a senior-heavy offensive line, along with [player_tooltip player_id='1822008' first='Trey' last='Abercrombie'] and Josh Hultqist. Juniors [player_tooltip player_id='1822096' first='Garren' last='Keeley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1819532' first='Owen' last='Clark'] round out the group, with Clark the only new starter on the line.

"We're probably the oldest group on the entire team," Huff said. "We have to provide leadership and give the younger guys an example to follow."

How much credit should those guys up front get for Greer's offensive success? Just ask McCoy.

"All of it," he said. "Being around a group like that makes you want to work harder."

While Greer has senior leadership along the OL and in the backfield with McCoy along with defensive guys like DL [player_tooltip player_id='1819527' first='Anius' last='Smith'] and LB Tyler Spinner, the Yellow Jackets are going to be fairly young across the board.

“It's a young crew,” assistant coach Matthew Huff said. “It's going to be a team with a lot of sophomores. You might see a couple of freshman again like we did last year. But the difference is that we've got a lot of really good seniors in big spots. We've got senior offensive linemen, a senior D-lineman, a senior running back. They've got a lot of work to do with the guys around them because they're leading those young guys. But there's a lot of talent on the field, and seeing them all work together and come together is great."

STARS SET TO SHINE

[player_tooltip player_id='1809928' first='Nathan' last='Huff'] OL, 2027 - Huff has been a steady, consistent player on the OL for Greer, and now it's his turn to lead. He's tall with long arms that he uses to win a bunch of leverage battles, and he's got the nasty streak that you want to see in an offensive lineman. He's a leader for the Yellow Jackets, and with a ton of experienced guys around him Huff is the kind of OL who's capable of taking over.

[player_tooltip player_id='1816751' first='Calvin' last='McCoy'] RB, 2027 (pictured) - As we mentioned, McCoy had just about as quiet a season as someone who rushes for 1,300 yards is capable of. His understated nature does not match his ability nor his presence on the field. McCoy's got an uncommon ability to be shifty and powerful at the same time, capable of running over guys while he runs past others. His blend of balance, speed, and pass-catching ability out of the backfield will allow him to continue to shine.

Tyler Spinner LB, 2027 - Spinner had a good season as a junior, and he's going to be expected to be an anchor for the LB group for the Yellow Jackets. He's got good instincts and finds the ball really well, and with some big graduation losses at the position his production should be on track to skyrocket.

DJ Hicks TE/H/WR, 2027 - As evidenced by all those slashes in his position, Hicks is a player who will do whatever Greer needs him to do. He's penciled in at H-back, but he's very much a hybrid TE/WR as well. Hicks is, more than anything, a hard worker who's going to find what he can do to help and do it well, whether it's a crucial catch or an equally important block. He's a big guy who has a knack for being in the right spot.

FILM REVIEW

[player_tooltip player_id='1819527' first='Anius' last='Smith'] DL, 2027 - Smith was plunked down into a DL that had a ton of senior production last season and he quickly carved out a spot for himself. Now it's his unit to lead. He's more than capable of that. He had good numbers last season, with 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. But the biggest thing Smith does is hold his ground, do exactly what his position entails, and allow his teammates to run around and make plays, creating his own kind of havoc.

BIGGEST LOSSES

Sammy White LB - Greer will have a hard time replacing the contributions of White, a game-changing LB who notched 66 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and nine sacks last year.

Lewis Bussey DL - Bussey led the way up front for Greer's defense, with 35 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks in his senior season.

UP-AND-COMING POTENTIAL

[player_tooltip player_id='1819530' first='Zy' last='Foster'] RB, 2028 - Foster was second on the team in rushing a year ago, with 447 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 9.5 yards per carry. He's a great change-of-pace to McCoy, and could be relied on even more heavily.

[player_tooltip player_id='1816760' first='Zay' last='Moseley'] WR, 2029 - The Yellow Jackets' top returning target, Moseley and Sammet already have a good relationship. He caught 33 balls for 565 yards and five TDs as a freshman, and the duo will look to make an even bigger mark this season.

Sammet was pressed into service as a freshman and responded well, throwing for more than 800 yards and six touchdowns. He was third on the team in rushing as well, adding five more scores on the ground.

Sammet can sling it around, but those skills on the move are what sets him apart. He likes to use his legs to put pressure on the defense, and it's something he's really good at.

But make no mistake, Sammet's a gunslinger who loves to throw the ball. He'll have a veteran line in front of him, a top-level back, and the chance to get even better as a sophomore.
