Sights and Sounds: Bernalillo 7×7 Tourney (Video/Recap, Part 1)

BERNALILLO – The Bernalillo Spartans hosted their annual 7-on-7 tournament Saturday with 13 varsity teams showing up from through the Albuquerque Metro Region, Northern New Mexico and the Four Corners. The action lasted all day on six fields.

Here is the breakdown by classification of the participating teams:

Class 6A: Sandia

Class 5A: Cibola, Piedra Vista, Santa Fe

Class 4A: Bernalillo, Bloomfield, Espanola Valley, Taos, Valley

Class 3A: Pojoaque Valley, Robertson, St. Michael's, West Las Vegas.

The tournament afforded us an opportunity to get our first offseason look at several established quarterbacks and several new ones as well. During pool play, Sandia rising senior [player_tooltip player_id='1594010' first='Jahleel' last='Lewis'] (6-foot-4, 215 pounds), fully recovered from a stress fracture in his foot that prevented him from competing at the Prep Redzone Exposure series camp two weeks ago, showed off his impressive pocket presence and rocket arm.

Two more experienced quarterbacks who showed off their skills during early pool play were Cibola's [player_tooltip player_id='1684435' first='Terry' last='Maes'], a 6-foot-2 rising junior southpaw who split signal calling duties last season with a graduated senior. Maes was impressive at the Prep Redzone Exposure Series camp two weeks ago and he continued to flash his skills Saturday.

In addition, Pojoaque Valley QB [player_tooltip player_id='1248677' first='Joshua' last='Gonzales'] is back to lead the Elks' offense in 2026. He threw for over 1,200 yards and 11 TD while rushing for over 500 yards in 2026 to propel Pojoaque Valley to the first home playoff game in school history. Saturday, Gonzales threw a TD pass to Elks WR Mateo Gonzales in the final seconds as the Elks stunned Cibola in pool play.

Among the new quarterbacks we watched in the early pool play, two stood out: Bernalillo rising junior Travis Spridgen and Bloomfield rising sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2114514' first='Wyatt' last='Babcock']. Spridgen is stocky with good size and a nice arm. Many of his throws had perfect spirals. Babcock is 6-foot-3, 190 pounds with a powerful throwing arm and excellent accuracy. The Bobcats hope he leads them to a third straight Class 4A title.

VIDEO 1: Valley vs. Sandia

https://youtu.be/1LgQhzZOhMs?si=V7VxCDz3ovAwDlEs

VIDEO 2: Cibola vs. Pojoaque Valley

https://youtu.be/azGQSa8n78c?si=X8bTIxUkgOVRgOnX

VIDEO 3: St. Michael's vs. Piedra Vista

https://youtu.be/VhFIWD_BEy0?si=77kU4Qc2Qjvgh2Xk

VIDEO 4: Bernalillo vs. Bloomfield

https://youtu.be/yDLBkFtOn24?si=wh8s8Ug0m3JxD8wm

VIDEO 5: Santa Fe vs Valley (Parts 1 and 2)

https://youtu.be/c8McMFzyh7k?si=BJ7M_LVcBk7ptUHp

https://youtu.be/TC3qUgtNhzo?si=0apUiwDAb1WwvA0v
