James Sapp Jr. | DE | Yorkville HS (IL) | 2027

Sapp looked like a Division I defensive lineman the moment he stepped on the field. He possesses a college-ready frame with length and athleticism that immediately catches your attention. He excelled during individual drills and showcased his ability to bend and finish during one-on-one reps, making him one of the top defensive standouts of the camp.

Mason Phillips | DL | Metamora HS (IL) | 2027

Phillips consistently won with physicality and technique throughout the day. His hand usage and leverage stood out during drills, while his effort and motor showed up during competitive periods. He passed the eye test and proved he can compete against quality offensive linemen in one-on-one situations.

[player_tooltip player_id='1887922' first='David' last='Croom'] III | RB | Plainfield East HS (IL) | 2027

Croom was one of the most explosive skill players in attendance. His burst, lateral quickness, and ability to accelerate out of cuts were evident in every drill. He looked smooth catching the football and showcased the athleticism that translated well during one-on-one competition.

[player_tooltip player_id='2225953' first='Braden' last='Gibson'] | WR | El Paso-Gridley HS (IL) | 2027

Gibson had one of the better all-around performances among the receivers. At nearly 6-foot-3, he has outstanding size and length, but it was his route running and ability to create separation that really stood out. He made several impressive plays during one-on-ones and consistently looked like one of the best athletes on the field.

[player_tooltip player_id='2225676' first='Ja'Shawn' last='Staples'] | RB | Mount Vernon HS (IL) | 2027

Staples turned heads from the opening drills with his explosiveness and competitiveness. He attacked every rep with confidence and showed excellent change of direction and natural playmaking ability. His performance in individual drills and competitive settings made it easy to see why he's a player to keep an eye on moving forward.

Overall Take

These five prospects didn't just have measurable traits—they passed the eye test. They looked the part, competed at a high level, and took advantage of opportunities during individual drills and one-on-one periods. Camps are designed to identify athletes who can separate themselves, and James Sapp Jr., Mason Phillips, [player_tooltip player_id='1887922' first='David' last='Croom'] III, [player_tooltip player_id='2225953' first='Braden' last='Gibson'], and [player_tooltip player_id='2225676' first='Ja'Shawn' last='Staples'] did exactly that at the McKendree Prospect Camp. Their performances should have college coaches taking a closer look as the 2027 recruiting cycle continues.
