AVC Football Camp: Offensive Line Notebook, Volume I

For the third year running, I was invited back by Fairleigh Dickinson University Head Coach Anthony Van Curen, as he - yet again - pulled off our region's largest one-day football camp. This year's rendition welcomed just over 450 participants who all eyed up the opportunity to get eyeballed in front of current college coaches.

I could not determine which was deeper: the roster was loaded with talent or the roster of coaches in attendance. In my three years covering this event, this is perhaps the widest range of U.S. states represented, including: Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Georgia, Florida, Delaware, and Connecticut. However, more than I can recall in the last, an International crop of talent was extremely well represented, with prospects hailing from Austria, Bavaria, Danmark, Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Catalunya, Kenya, Podlaskie, Rhineland-Palatinate, Steiermark, Thuringia, Uppland, and Vienna. As far as coaches, there were more than I could count.

Below you will find my evaluation notes for the position group mentioned in the title of this article. These notes are strictly performance-based observations from what I witnessed at this event.

Be sure to follow me on Twitter for the latest New Jersey high school football prospect news and not miss a beat!

There was much to like about Theo Tombros' performance. Tombros had a great deal of balance in his stance, which allowed him to move in all ways and not truly ever leave himself vulnerable to exploitation. Although he can stand to recoil his arms after extending when punching in pass protection, he did a nice job of locking them out, inside and tight, to avoid any holds.

One of the largest prospects to participate was Millville's [player_tooltip player_id='1693384' first='Issiah' last='Thomas'].Thomas is a prospect that, come evaluation and ranking time, is worth a second look to see if he can enter the top 50 in his class. He checks the boxes for size, but also bends extremely well and has quick feet. It will be interesting to see if he can put it all together this fall, his senior season.

For Hoboken's Anthony Lopez, the next time I see him I wish to see improved habits. I noticed that Williams did a good job of corralling edge pressure, but struggled a bit more when defenders went inside. Williams must work on his power slide in order to power down more quickly and authoritatively to prevent defenders from taking the most inside path to the quarterback - straight up the middle.

I would not want to get into a fist fight with West Orange's Samuel Furr. Although I did not get a solid look at what he did, I certainly heard it. Furr delivered tremendous impact with his hands in pass protection - so much so that everyone was able to hear how much force his punch set had. I am sure that his matchup had red hand marks for several minutes after that.

Anthony Van Curen Football Camp Coverage

Defensive + Specialist Combine Scores
Offensive Combine Scores
The Eye Test, Offense
The Eye Test, Defense + Specialists
Defensive Backs, Volume 1
Defensive Line, Volume 1
Linebackers, Volume 1
Offensive Linemen, Volume 1
