You Are Athlete Event Coverage: Quarterback Notebook, Part II

This year's event was hosted by Piscataway High School and was, in my experience, their best yet. Being that Pernell is scheduled to be a four-year starter at this point, I am rather familiar with his game. The one thing that improved some was his zip on the ball. I did not get neither a very long nor detailed look at Cady at this one, but I thought that he could get the ball out quicker. Having yet to complete his freshman year of high school, Benjamin Ortiz came to complete. I thought that Ortiz was intentional with transferring his weight off of his front foot when throwing. This is important at any age, but especially given Ortiz's smaller stature, to get maximum juice on the ball. I did remark that he required a lot of shoulder torque to get the ball out about 15 yards. A hustler much like myself, it is rare that Gilardi is not at an event I am at, and that I am not at an event is at. Gilardi showed his standard clean play. His drops were clean, fluid, and effortless. In terms of ball placement, he has improved since the last time I saw him, delivering strikes right on the money in anticipation of where his target <em>will </em>be. For as great and majestic of a thrower-of-the-ball that he is, timing with his receivers was an issue - which is excusable and to be expected at a public showcase/camp.
