We just dropped our updated 2028 rankings, and we're starting our positional breakdowns by looking at the newest players in the rankings. After going <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/05/behind-the-scenes-of-the-2028-rankings-spring/">behind the scenes</a> of the 2028 class update, we're looking at the nine newly-ranked running backs.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which Running Backs Were Added to the 2028 Rankings?</h2>   Editor's Note: Check out our other newly-ranked position pieces:   <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/05/newly-ranked-2028-qbs/">QBs</a>    Thompson really impressed us when we finally dove into the film of his 1,500-yard season, especially his 400-yard outing early in the season. He's narrow through the hole, rarely getting hit squarely by defenders. He holds the ball high and tight in the open field, a fun quirk that makes his running style stick out among his peers. Despite the unique offense he plays in, Thompson should be a popular player on the recruiting trail next year, making a Division II or even an FCS school happy.     Simon has flown under the radar as a talented running back, first hitting our rankings after ranking in a talented <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2026/03/top-7-rbs-in-franklin-nash-wilson-county/">Franklin/Nash/Wilson Deep Dive</a>. He's one of the more talented pass blockers in the state at his position. He always gives 100%, and we're excited to see what he can do in a potentially bigger role in 2026.     Bogle can fly and was one of two sophomore backs who paced Princeton's impressive offense. He averaged over 11 yards per carry with a handful of long touchdown runs, a true threat to score from anywhere on the field. He gets to full speed in a hurry and causes defenders to take bad angles down the field.     Even with Orange's tough season, Thomas was a bright spot with nearly 1,000 yards. He's a tough, between-the-tackles runner who rarely goes down on first contact. That's especially impressive, especially at his size. He's patient, but doesn't need a massive hole to pick up yardage, and some of his best runs came from cutbacks through smaller holes.     Whalen's a patient runner with plenty of vision and lateral cutting ability. All of those work well in Charlotte Catholic's Single-Wing offense. Whalen was steady, willing to pick up tough yardage between the tackles, with enough speed to reach the edge. He's the top returning rusher on Charlotte Catholic's roster, and we think he could have a big senior year.     Shephard is a patient, slippery runner who performed well with limited opportunities last season. The Titans lose a workhorse back, and not only should Shephard get more touches, but he could see his volume skyrocket. He averaged over six and a half yards per carry, and he did it without many huge chunk runs.    There's plenty to come from Matt Morrow, Joshua Graham, and me on the 2028 rankings over the next week.
