The varsity game seems to get more competitive every year as players get bigger, faster and more explosive sooner than they did in the past.

The year-around process of lifting, jumping and sprinting, as well as living in the weight room and working with outside trainers is one of the reasons for this surge.

And, to maintain such an aggressive off-season plan, it is critical to develop iron-clad processes and commit to the daily grind.

It's the only way to become elite in this day and age - if you aren't doing it, you can bet your competition is...

In this report we will take a quick look at five guys from all of the returning classes and from different positions who all have one thing in common, they have been grinding hard in the off-season getting ready for this fall.

So without further adieu, let's check out what these guys have been up to:

[player_tooltip player_id='2147552' first='Jay' last='Curtis'] , 6'2, 170, WR, Salina South, '27, [PICTURED ABOVE]. He was a big part of last year's late-season rally that led to a pair of upset victories in the playoffs. A dangerous wideout, he is a sizzling option that picks up big yards after the catch. With excellent size, reach and explosiveness, he can burn teams deep on the long ball but is also a technician running crisp routes. He is coming off a junior season when he had 1,000+ receiving yards, averaging 20+ yards per catch and scored 10 TD's. This spring he has been busy fine-tuning his game, visiting schools and currently holds five next-level offers. This summer he intends to hit camps at K-State, Missouri, and Lindenwood and also has a number of team camps gearing up in June. This guy is a weapon ready for an exciting season this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1463234' first='Ryder' last='Farley'], 5'10, 190, LB/LS, Mill Valley, ‘27, up next for the seniors-to-be is a ball buster of a linebacker who is also an ace long snapper. He is coming off a strong junior season from his LB position using next-level instincts and a violent streak to blow up plays at the line of scrimmage. He has been working hard in the off-season, training with Top Speed and focusing on speed, quickness and change of direction. He is also working with Coach Benton from MNU, who is a standout LB coach, for position work. This spring he is running track and planning on numerous camps for both linebacker work and to fine-tune his long-snapping skills. He also has junior days lined up with Washburn, Missouri Western, Ottawa, Lindenwood and Friends. This guy is going to dominate this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='1590411' first='Houston' last='Robb'] , 6'0, 200, LB, Blue Valley SW, '28, next in line is the first baller from the soon-to-be junior class and is another LB who plays with great physicality and has standout read and react skills flowing to the ball. He is versatile enough to play any of the linebacker positions and brings a high-impact game shutting down plays between the tackles but has the lateral quickness to cut off speedy backs on the perimeter. Once the season was over he transitioned into working out for this fall with trainer Tanner Allen, who is also his linebacker coach during the season. He is still in the process of deciding which camps and school visits to commit to this summer. This guy is starting to generate significant next-level interest and is going to take it to the next level this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id='2168684' first='James' last='Guyer'], 5'10, 180, RB/DB, Kapaun, '28, next up is a two-way baller from the class of '28 who was part of last season's 4A State Championship team. On offense he is an excellent RB who has the power and burst to pick up big yards after the initial hit, but where he really shined was as a ballhawk safety who is a pounding open-field tackler. Once the season came to an end he committed to the off-season grind, lifting and doing speed work and also sharpened his game playing 7v7 for the Wichita Wheat 18u team. He has also been working with one of the top trainers in the state, Coach Tabor of PIA, who is also a member of the title-winning KMC coaching staff during the season. His work is paying off as he has put on weight and has gotten faster. This guy is ready to take the next step.

[player_tooltip player_id='2128265' first='Braxton' last='Stroda'] , 6'0, 195, LB/ATH, Junction City, '29, and last but certainly not least, and the only member of the soon-to-be sophomore class, is a versatile defender who was a rare freshman 6A starter at MLB last fall. He caught my eye early in the season as he plays a smart game, has good football instincts and great closing speed tracking down backs and receivers. With his explosive game and overall athleticism, he burns through gaps and causes chaos in the backfield. He also uses his strength and weaponized hands to destroy double teams and brings the wood on arrival. This off-season has been busy, wrestling earlier in the year and is pitching on the baseball team this spring. He also plans on going to camps at KU and K-State. This guy is a baller who is going to be en fuego this fall.
