Next in Line: MWL Underclassmen All-Conference Selections

<p>The Midwestern League once again proved to be one of the deeper and more competitive districts in Oregon 5A football, producing multiple playoff teams and a semifinal contender in Churchill. Thurston controlled the regular season, finishing undefeated in league play and earning a strong playoff seed, while Churchill caught fire late and made an impressive postseason run to the semifinals. Crater also reached the bracket, highlighting the depth across the conference. While several senior stars led the way this season, a strong group of underclassmen emerged and showed they are ready to carry the league into the future. From disruptive defensive linemen to emerging playmakers in the secondary, the next generation in the Midwestern League is already making its presence felt.</p>   <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>First Team</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Filipe established himself as one of the most disruptive young defensive linemen in the conference, finishing with five sacks and 13 tackles for loss. His ability to penetrate gaps and create chaos in the backfield made him a constant problem for opposing offenses. For a sophomore, he shows advanced physicality and instincts at the point of attack. As he continues to develop strength and technique, Filipe has the potential to become one of the premier defensive forces in 5A.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Piquette earned first-team recognition thanks to his strong play in the secondary and ability to limit explosive plays. He displayed solid instincts in coverage and showed confidence when matched up against top receivers. His physicality and awareness allowed Thurston's defense to stay aggressive up front. As he gains experience, Piquette projects as a cornerstone defensive back for the program.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Curington played a key role in Churchill's defensive success during their deep playoff run, showing maturity and consistency beyond his years. His ability to diagnose plays quickly and rally to the football helped stabilize the second level of the defense. Coaches trust him to be around the ball, whether filling gaps in the run game or helping in coverage. With another offseason of development, he looks poised to become a leader for the Lancers.</p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Second Team</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Nagel contributed valuable depth and production along Churchill's defensive front, helping the team control the line of scrimmage during its playoff push. He plays with effort and leverage, consistently working to disrupt blocking schemes. His development trajectory suggests a player capable of taking on a larger role moving forward. Expect Nagel to be a bigger factor as he gains experience.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Davenport emerged as another young defensive back making an impact for Thurston's strong defense. His recognition on the all-conference list reflects reliable coverage skills and the ability to contribute in key moments. He plays with confidence and competes well against opposing receivers. With continued growth, Davenport could develop into one of the top defensive backs in the conference.</p>     <p class="text-gray-700">Johnson's inclusion as a freshman stands out, signaling a high ceiling and early impact at the varsity level. Competing against older players, he showed composure and playmaking ability in the secondary. His athleticism and willingness to compete suggest a player capable of growing into a major contributor. As he matures physically and mentally, Johnson has intriguing long-term upside.</p>    <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Honorable Mention</strong></h2>    <p class="text-gray-700">Hamann earned recognition through consistent effort along the defensive line and a strong motor on every snap. He brings toughness and physicality, helping anchor the front against opposing rushing attacks. Even on a developing team, his presence was noticeable. Continued development could see him become a key piece for Eagle Point moving forward.</p>
