When the final few seconds ticked off the clock at Pitbull Stadium on the campus of Florida International University, it was hard to believe what the scoreboard read.

Jacksonville Bolles, a program regarded as one of the best in Florida all season long, headed to the 2A final against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney as a team that was optimistic and had a belief that they would wrap up yet another state title.

Veteran head coach Matt Toblin and his team had come into the contest with the Cougars on an 11-game winning streak and had dominated the opposition during that stretch – with talent all over the field.

But as the game moved along, it was evident that this program would not be the better team on this night. Cardinal Mooney scored on every possession and cruised to a 52-28 win and a 2A title.

In the wake of that loss was the six-hour ride back to Duval County and left this program, which finished 13-2, with a bad taste and a feeling that things would be different in 2026.

As they headed toward the off-season, there were several positions to be filled – and that has been the mindset since 2025 came to an end.

RISING SENIOR CLASS COMES BACK WITH A PURPOSE

After that loss in the state finals, there was a group of players that knew they would have to take charge in the off-season.

The rising senior class (2027) had players with experience and leadership.

Among those players include Akin Alande (WR), [player_tooltip player_id='1715862' first='Aidan' last='Anderson'] (RB), Jace Bennett (DB), Dawson Brydges (WR), Malakhi Dunn (WR), Samuel Ellis (WR), Joseph Hammond (WR), Christian Hayes (LB), Travis Mann (K/P), Dashaydon Phillips (DB), Zach Sherr (DL), Cam Tietze (WR) and defensive lineman Griffin Vollertsen.

A STRONG UNDERCLASS AWAITS

As the rising senior class will be impressive, it's the future that the Bulldogs will be counting on with one of the top rising junior (2028) classes in the state.

With the state's leading rushing [player_tooltip player_id='1153040' first='Xander' last='Edwards'] and heavily recruited defensive end [player_tooltip player_id='547812' first='Asher' last='Ghioto'] coming back, this group is loaded with elite talent.

In addition, prospects such as [player_tooltip player_id='2083378' first='Brett' last='Bearden'] (LB), Wes Coughlin (WR), John Davis (LB), Langston Florence (K/P), Jaxon Flowers (QB), De'Angelo Ford (DB), Sooryan Ghandi (DL), J.C. Gonzalez (WR/DB), Maddox Helbing (LB), Truett Henderson (WR), Jack Howard (DE/NG), Joseph Kelleter (DL), Grayson Kuskowski (OL) and defensive back Major Lee.

The class also has Rylan Marler (TE), Whitman Moore (LB), Cooper Moorman (TE/LS), Jack Riley (TE), Jack Smith (LB), Victor Smith (DL), Derrick Thomas (DB), [player_tooltip player_id='1247412' first='Luke' last='Toland'] (QB), Milo Trovato (LB), Sam Venus (DB), T.J. Williamson (WR/DB), Reggie Wilson (DL) and offensive lineman Will Zebroski.

The depth continues with the rising sophomore (2029) class that includes such players as Yaman Albisi (RB), Aiden Chester (QB/WR), Hudson Cleek (QB), William English (OL), Philemon Fiaseu (LB), Devyaan Gandhi (DB), Brantley Hassel (WR), [player_tooltip player_id='1308140' first='Jameer' last='Johnson'] (TE), Liam Lemene (RB/CB) and defensive back Luke Malhtora.

There is also Matt Mizell (RB/WR), Jeremiah Moses (WR), Parker Owens (LB), Cedric Scott (DL), Nate Shilling (CB), Michael Tari (QB), Jack Truog (QB/TE) and kicker/punter Devon von Goeben. Also keep an eye on rising sophomores (2030) offensive linemen John Avera and Camp Shelton.
