Lake Oswego senior quarterback and reigning 6A state championship game MVP [player_tooltip player_id='402409' first='Hudson' last='Kurland'] had been committed to the Washington State Cougars since June.

But that changed Saturday when the 6-foot-4, 195-pound mobile quarterback announced his decommitment from the program.

His announcement read, in part:

“After much thought and prayer, and in light of recent coaching changes, I have decided to officially decommit from Washington State University,” Kurland wrote. “This was not an easy decision, but it is one that I believe is in my best interest and will allow me to find the best fit for my future on and off the field.”

Washington State head coach Jimmy Rogers, a crucial person in Kurland's recruitment, recently accepted the same position at Iowa State.

Those types of late coaching changes frequently lead high school commits to follow their coach to his new destination.

And based on Kurland's recent social media follows and followers, it looks as though he has a clear path in front of him, although he declined to name a favorite, as he has heard from several schools.

Kurland did say, however, that he has scheduled one official visit already and hopes to end his recruitment during February's traditional signing period.

Nemec's speculation

Based on social media follows/followers and Rogers' recent move to Iowa State, it looks as though there's mutual interest between Kurland and Iowa State, a Big 12 program in sudden need of quarterback depth with Rocco Becht's transfer portal announcement.

Will Rogers offer Kurland a scholarship - and a chance to follow him?

If that happens, the strong relationship the two already share may make that a smooth transition for Kurland.

But that remains to be seen, as the various moving pieces — head coaches, assistant coaches, a starting quarterback (and others) into the portal — leave a lot of things still up in the air.

For his part, Kurland is already hearing from multiple schools and keeping a tight lid on exactly what his next step will be.
