Sights and Sounds: Class 2A Quarterfinal Battle (Recap/Video)

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>BERNALILLO</strong> – Halting a second half Loving rally, Legacy Academy scored the final 22 points of the game for a 49-18 victory over the Falcons Saturday afternoon in a Class 2A quarterfinal matchup at Bernalillo High School.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Legacy Academy (10-1) hosts Eunice Saturday in the Class 2A semifinals at Bernalillo High School. Hozho Academy travels to Texico in the other Class 2A semifinal. The winners of those two games will meet Nov. 29 in the 2A state championship game.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Trailing 27-6 at halftime, Loving's third quarter surge began when [player_tooltip player_id='1137875' first='Tristen' last='Onsurez'] returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion attempt failed (a common theme for Loving).</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Loving intercepted a Legacy pass late in the third quarter and drove for another score to cut the gap to 27-18.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Momentum flipped a few minutes later.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>With about 8 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Legacy Academy turned the ball over on downs in Loving territory. The relentless Silverbacks defense forced an intentional grounding penalty when the Loving QB was in the end zone. The result? A safety.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Loving attempted an on-sides kick but Legacy recovered. The Silverbacks took advantage of the favorable field position to drive for a TD. Along the way, they converted a key third-and-9. Legacy RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1606048' first='Xander' last='Chavez']</strong> ran into the end zone for the score with about 6-1/2 minutes left to give the Silverbacks a 36-18 lead.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When the Legacy defense stopped Loving on downs, the Silverbacks added to their lead with another rushing TD to push the lead to 42-18.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>After another defensive stop, Legacy added another TD with about a minute left to create the final score.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Loving led, 6-0, after the first quarter before Legacy scored 27 points in the second quarter. One of those TDs was a Pick-6 in the end zone by senior defensive end <strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1006736' first='Zachary' last='Perea']</strong>.
